does anyone know if job opportunities are limited as an RN if you go this route???? I usually see jobs asking for a valid RN license i am just wondering if not having my ADN or BSN will affect how many jobs i can apply for??? for anyone who doesnt know what this is it is minimum required college courses to take the nclex-RN but you do not get a degree you can only take the nclex test. as far as i know you can only practice in california with this option.

No. They don't care about your education except out of curiosity. They only care if your license is clear and if you have credible experience. The 30 unit option becomes problematic only if you leave the state of CA. If you intend to stay in CA for your entire working career and don't intend to seek further education, there is nothing wrong with this option.

However, keep in mind that lots of people started out in nursing thinking they would never want to live or practice anywhere else, and that they would never want to further their education, and they felt differently a few years down the road. Things change ... :)

well i am certain 100% sure i will not want to move but as for the continuing education part....well what limitations would this give me that would make me want to continue school??? thats my main concern before deciding to do this which sort of goes back to my first post..what advantages do i have with an ADN or BSN over just my RN license??? i understand that most managerial nursing positions require this sort of thing but other than that i dont have any knowledge of what those degrees give me..can anyone help shed some light to me on this situation???

There are some employers that will specify an educational level for a listed position. If you want that position and don't have the specified education, then you probably would not be considered. Usually however the job listings will say something like, "graduate of an accredited RN program". However, I'm one of those non-graduates, and I've been hired more than once without meeting the graduation requirement. My license got me hired just fine by itself.

No. Clinical classes must still be completed. If you inquire about the 30 unit option at any of the schools that offer it, you will get a lot of discouragement from the nursing department. Normally they avoid dealing with this type of student by relegating 30 unit students to a "space available" status, and we all know that there are never any "space available" seats.

This is true, nursing dept from diff schools that I have inquired are very discouraging but regardless I'm in a race against time and very much willing to go this route. If only I could finish my physiology classes w/c are always full esp. with the recent budget cutbacks class sizes are getting smaller. I only need physio then microbio then i can start applying to diff schools for this 30 unit option.

Some have had success with it, but I discourage it as I've spoken to many nursing departments who will not accept a transfer student from the 30 unit option. You're only dealing with a few more classes for your ADN, I would rather go for the extra year and do the ADN route and have the option of furthering to the MSN than do the 30 unit option and no degree to show for other than my previous Bachelors. Do what you feel is right for you, but I would really think about it before going through with it. Good Luck

Funny that I stumbled upon this because I just started considering this option myself. I was going to start tomorrow going around to different community colleges to inquire about the 30 unit option program. I have all my prerequisites completed to be accepted into an ADN program but my problem are the waiting lists; 2-3 years if a seat becomes available in a RN program or I could attend a 64,000 ADN program at WCU...NOT!!! My ultimate education goal is to get a MSN or possibly PhD. Does anybody know if the 30 unit option hinders you from being considered at the university level for entrance into the BSN/MSN progrm? Is there anyone here who went through the 30 unit option and moved out of state? what was your experience? Are there any states that would accept a 30 unit option RN?

I heard that the 30 unit option would prevent you from getting a ADN or higher. This is just a rumor and was never confirmed by any counselor. I would contact a school counselor and find out for sure. Please let us know when you find the answer.

The 30 unit option is not for the person who plans to continue their education. You will not graduate and will not be eligible to enter the next level of education. If you want a BSN, then go for it from the beginning, or get an ASN that will allow you to progress.
