Anyone Else Catching Flack for Going Back to School?

Nursing Students LPN-RN

From your fellow LPNs that is?

First, all i heard from anyone was "oh you're an LPN, when/are you going back for your RN," which got old in a heartbeat

Now it's "so why didn't you go for the RN in the FIRST PLACE." or "in it for the money, huh" and a few other smart orificed remarks that i'm not thinking of at this time.

I do not think it's jealousy one bit. I think it's a matter of frustration when you're told (like we're not aware LOL) how low you're paid, you're cheap help, etc. and on top of that you have fellow LPNs going back to school.

Is it going to discourage me from school. No, it's just annoying that no matter where you go, what you do, there's people along the way that think they must ask rude, intrusive questions on career and educational choice.

I'm sure when i go for my MSN, there will be someone to say "oh, going for your doctorate?":angryfire

I can relate to your post Dutchgirl. When I was in the consolidation peroid at the end of my RN program I choose to do it at the hospital I worked at as an LPN/RPN. It wasn't so much jealousy as it was a lack of understanding what the RN role (particulary as a student) was in my situation. It was like being in between a rock and a hard place. The LPNs, who where used to me in that role, still wanted me to function/work as an LPN while there instead of a student RN. This wasn't on the unit that I did work on. Since I tend to be blunt, I made it clear that I could not function in both roles and since I was there as an RN student, that would be role I would be functioning in.

They are jealous because they haven't been able to get their RN's.

I still don't think that's always the case.

Oh yeah...I heard snippy comments when I went back for my RN...now I get the same crap because I'm going back for my BSN!! There always seems to be people that have to have a sour grapes attitude and can't be happy for people when they suceed. And, the biggest challenge has been remaining at the same place I worked as an LPN as an RN...and hearing the comments of the LPN's and CNA's I am now 'supervising'! Don't get me started on that!! Just keep your head high, and know that furthering your education will get you where you want to go, while they will be stuck in the same old rut.

Yeah, in Texas (@ least in my part anyway - East), the LVN/LPN has almost become a prerequisite for entry to ADN program. The competition is so stiff, a lot of the applicants are being told they'll have better luck entering through the transition route vs. str8 entry.

So it's kind of viewed as a natural progression.

Be proud of yourself for bettering yourself! I know that it may be very hard to ignor or brush off rude and hurtful comments, but you know deep in your heart what you want to be. You started out as an LPN, so what?! One thing that you can bring from this is, when you recieve your RN, you can respect LPN's because you have been there. You know what they endure and you know how they got there. Take pride in yourself for what you are planning on doing, hold your head high, and go for it. When the comments come in, be as sweet as you can be and KILL THEM WITH KINDNESS! That's always been my motto and it's always seemed to work. Don't let them know they are getting to you. Then walk away knowing that you are making the best of yourself, no matter how you started out or how long it takes you to get there, or how much money you do, will or won't make. Life is too short to live worrying about what others think. Keep up your spirit...you'll make it, and when you do, let us know...We are ALL here for you!
