Hello all. New here so thank you for giving me the platform to reach out for some help and advice. It’s greatly appreciated.
So as stated above, I am an LPN in NY. I have been a licensed LPN since 2012. I am looking to relocate from NY to TN. Correct me if I am wrong but don’t have to reside in Tennessee to be licensed here as an LPN?
I have been having issues with being able to apply for rental properties to live in with my wife and 2 children as these property managers want to either see proof that my license transfer is pending or that I am employed as an LPN in Tennessee currently. However how do I do that if I need to reside in TN to get my license to work there but I can’t get a job without an active nursing license in the state?
Ya see what I mean? Like you have to work here for housing but have to live here to get a license transferred. It’s like one negated the other. Meanwhile all I am trying to do is relocate my family to a new state and give us a better life as NY has just become too much and I need a change.
If anyone can point me in the right direction or help me out with advice, has dealt with this, etc. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much. It’s so confusing and frustrating at the same time.
Anyone? Haha. Thanks again.

You can simply apply for the TN license. You do not have to live in a state to have a license to work in the state. You can apply for it. I have 3 licenses (one compact where I live). However, you cannot get a "compact" state license unless you are a resident of the state. So it will work only in Tennessee until you become a resident and request or apply for the compact license.

Oh wow! I definitely thought I read I have to reside in the state to have a license there since my NY license is not a compact one. Thank you.

You can have a license for TN while not living there that is only valid in TN. You do have to have a legal residence in TN in order to hold a compact license. However, if you are going to be working in TN, the single state license initially is all that you need.

Excellent!! I think what I was reading incorrectly was about the compact license then. As of right now I’m just looking to have my license in TN so I can work/move there. For now I’m not worried about the compact license as I’m worried about getting to TN to live and work right now. Thank you so much as well.

Lots of folks from Washington State are seeking better, freer pastures in Tennessee as well. Mostly folk sick of the overbearing, micromananging State government. Covid didn't help. Individual freedoms are definitely getter fewer. Best wishes!

Hi Owen, did you happen to move to Tennessee already? I am also looking to relocate from California.

Hey. Yes I did. Actually been here since October. Started working here in February. Loving it here so far. And as an LPN, I am able to do so much more as far as actually skilled nursing work than I was in NY.
Hey thanks for replying! Do you happen to know the pay an RN is getting? And what part of Tennessee are you in, West, Mid, or East?

No problem! I actually don't. I'm sorry. I am looking to do the LPN to RN bridge program once I am eligible for tuition reimbursement through my employer. They offer it after one year. So I am curious too (if anyone has any input as well)
I am in middle tennessee (Murfreesboro)
