Some Advice about your future..

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

Published

I graduated and LVN program in December of 2008. All throughout the program, I worked full time as a CNA, and then in October of 2008, I got layed off due to "budget cuts"(I was working at a research center). Anyhow, while I was unemployed, I looked for CNA jobs at hospitals that hired LVN's. The reason I did this was because it is much easier to transition into an LVN position from CNA at a hospital, opposed to just getting ur license and looking for jobs who say, "one year of experience required". Many new LVN's find it very hard to find a job right after getting their license. Anyhow, after 4 months of looking, I landed a job at an acute care/long term care(med/surg) hospital as a CNA. I took my boards on March 19th, just recently passed, told my DON and asked her if there was an LVN position open. Guess what she said? "We will create a position for you!" So my advice to all of you LVN/LPN students, find a job as a CNA at a place where they hire LVN's. You will have a better chance of getting a job as an LVN/LPN right away, opposed to being rejected by all of these places who want nurses with at least a years experience.

what that person is saying about getting a cna job before you graduate is the best thing you can do - to get your foot in the door - because when I contact jobs . they are eager to hire when they think I'm experience - however when I say I'm a new grad - they say try back when you get some experience else where

That is exactly what I am saying! My former classmates who were CNA's at their jobs, now work as LVN's at their jobs. And the one's who didn't have a job as a CNA at a facility, are struggling to find a job as an LVN.

Thanks ! I think I'm going to start applying for jobs today. I'll be leaving my full time job in two weeks to finish up my LPN program. I currently don't have a hospital job, so I think I may do this. My mentor gave me a job listing for hospitals that hire cnas and lpns so I'll be doing this today ! Thanks and great advice !

I just got my lvn license last April, I've applied nursing homes around in Anaheim CA, but still can't get a job. My last job is at residential care as a CNA but I need to quit bec of maternity leave. Even with a experience as a CNA for 3 years still can't find an LVN job. I'm not losing hope yet, I'm going to apply different cities within 15 miles.

I wish all my fellow nureer friend the best and I hope we all get employed soon

things are surely looking ugly

thanks for the heads up. i was actually contemplating this idea. i currently do hair on the weekends, but i start lpn school in the fall and thought i should get a cna job to perfect my skills and get a foot in the door. its good to hear it from the inside. thanks for this post and good luck to all of you still looking for work.

Good advice...I'm getting my CNA license in about a month and I'm hoping to get a job doing that (although who knows if I can get one in this crappy economy!) Besides the fact that it will look good on a resume, I just think it will help me in my clinicals, and help me be a better nurse...the more direct patient contact the better, IMO, even if it's CNA work I can still hone my assesment skills and work on communication and comfort with my patients. Besides I can't imagine delegating to CNA's if I've never actually done it myself!
