Passed first semester, but still nervous in clinicals

Is this normal?

This semester was like entering a different world for me. I felt unsure of myself the whole way, and I'm still lacking confidence. We practiced various skills in the lab--but the only real nursing skills I got to practice in clinicals was a single med pass, insulin, and basic wound care. And I still struggle with patient care occasionally. I feel very behind, like I haven't gotten enough out my clinical education this semester.

I'm just tired of constantly second-guessing myself and being afraid. Clinicals stress me out so much, and I feel like I mess up every step of the way.

Were any of you in this position? Does it get better? What can I do now to help increase my confidence?

First of all- you're not 'dumb'. You are inexperienced. There's a HUGE difference. The only way to gain confidence is through practice. That's what clinical is FOR.

Chin up- practice all you can (in the sim lab if you have one). Be mindful of every opportunity. You'll get there.

I was that student - I walked into clinical my first semester with absolutely no clue what to do. I too had only one med pass. Giving a patient their morning care took me most of the morning.

The good news is - you'll get better! (IF you continue to apply yourself and strive to learn). You've gotten the first clinical out of the way. It's a big step when you're nervous and new.

One of my suggestions is to get a job as a tech in healthcare - PREFERABLY at a hospital (not a nursing home). Being a tech in the hospital will expose you to all sorts of healthcare experiences, but best of all it will make you comfortable with being on a hospital floor. You'll master taking a quick set of vitals, doing a fast bed bath/linen change, etc... and most importantly you will gain comfort in patient interaction.

I would suggest that you get feedback from your peers in nursing school about where they work/which floors are good for techs. Then start applying. Good luck with your next semester - I'm sure that you'll do an awesome job! :)

Those feelings are normal, i had that too before, Just always trust your self and everything will fall into place. Can i ask a favor, I lost my syllabus because its been years since the last time i was at school, i am now trying to review for the board exam, I was wondering if you will be kind to send me a copy of your syllabus at school, so that i know what topic to review. Thank You so much!
