LPN in Boces Dutchess

Hi.. I'm new in the forum.

I'm thinking to start a career in LPN. I live in Dutchess and I have the option to go to Boces.

Does anybody here go to Boces for LPN full time?

I didn't get any information yet and I want to visit this school.

Somebody can help me please.

Do you know how are the classes? How hard are they?

Did somebody take the reading test? I'm not American and my first language is Spanish. I would like to take advantage of my second language.

I will appreciate any information about it.

Thank you very much!!!!

Hi! I'm currently attending Dutches Boces in the LPN Full Time Adult Day program...and am just about done with A&P...I started there 1/22 and will graduate (if all continues to go well) in December.

I'm not sure what info. you're looking for, but I can tell you that so far I'm really enjoying the program and the teachers are wonderful and helpful- at least this has been my experience. It is a very intense program...expect a quiz daily and Unit tests every week. The minimum passing average per section is a 75%.

I would strongly suggest you call Mrs. Tursig in the LPN office. She is very helpful and I'm sure can answer all of your questions. You'll prob. get her voice mail when you call, but she's great about returning calls. When you say the "reading test", I'm not sure if you're referring to the entrance exam...but you will need to be sceduled for the exam. The test has reading, math and science on it...and you are allowed to come back & "retake" the math section if it gives you probs...but not the reading.

I'd just suggest studying a GED book to brush up.

Re: the fact that English isn't your first language...there is a lovely woman in my class who doesn't speak much English, and she is doing wonderfully! Again, please speak to an advisor at Boces about your concerns...but from a student perspective, I can highly recommend this school.

Any more questions...please ask.

Hi SPARKLE

Thank you very much for your comments.

I will ask more questions.

1.- How difficult is the entrance test? I bought a book for that test because I wanted to go to Westchester Community college... but I need more classes and I can't start until June 2009. I don't want to waste to much time.

2.- How much is the cost of the program? I believe is expensive because of the time. I'm pretty sur I have to ask for a student loan

3.- I know you are a full time student? DO you work part time or you study at home during the rest of the day?

4.- Are the books easy to follow? I usually read a chapter twice. I went to college already and I got good grades. But I still wondering about science classes.

I'm really good at math. I studied sys. ing. in my home country so it will help me a lot. But i don't remember anything about biology o chemestry.

I'm affraid to start something new, specially if I will get a student loan. I don't want to fail. I would like to become a Nurse in the future. I don't have to work if I go to school full time. My husband support me 100%. That makes me happy. But I'm still affraid because of the english language.

Thank you very much for helping. Like I told you before I appreciate what do you and other people do in this forum.

I hope you can respond my questions.

Thank you very much

hey people... don't forget to post information about dutchess boces.

i'm interested to hear about you experience there.

also anybody here did lpn (from boces) to rn (in another school, maybe dutchess community college.

how did you do it???

thanks!!!

Hi...OK...let me try to address all of your questions below;

1.- The entrance exam is not difficult. If you're not too strong in Reading/Grammar...then just try to review the book you bought beforehand, because there was a short essay that had to be written on a subject they provided.

2.-The program cost is $8500, not including $350 for books and lab pack...as well as whatever additional expenses you'll need for uniforms for clinical, a stethoscope, and fees when you graduate to sit for your boards. I financed my education 100% in student loans.

3.-I am not working at this time, and dedicate an hour a night to study for quizzes- and a bit more to do well on the unit tests that are given every Monday in this section. Several people in my class are working part-time however, so it can be done. I will say, that most of them have cut back their hours during the first quarter of A&P to allow sufficient time to study. If you must work....I would suggest, cutting it back to only one or two days a week in the very beginning, until you get a feel for the pace, work, and your study routine.

4.-We have only just finished the first book...and it was very easy to follow. There is also a study guide, and CD that come with the main A&P text book...so whatever your learning style, they cover it pretty well.

I really think that if this is something you want to do, then you should go for it. Like I said previously, there are others in our class who do not speak English as their first language, and they are doing great. I'm sure you'll do fine too! Good luck & I hope this helped. :nuke:

THANK YOU very much for answering my questions.

I'm going tomorrow to get information about everything.

Let's see what they say about it.

maybe I can take the test and start this september.

Gook luck and please keep in touch...

let me know how is everything at school.

have a good day

my pleasure...keep us posted on your decision & good luck!

Hi !

Just have a quick question on Dutchess BOCES entrance test. I have applied for Spetember, 08 LPN program and they have assigned me a TEAS test date of 7/22/08. Do you think I am too late for starting in Sept., 08. Also I went to school last time about 15 years ago. I see I have to write an essay on a topic that will be provided during the test. Do you have any suggestion on what should be typical topic for writing essays? As I said I am out of school for quite a long while and it would be difficult for me to write an essay on the spot on a topic that I don't have any knowledge of. Please advise!

Congrats on your decision to apply to Dutchess Boces. I do not think that you'll be testing to late for the Sept class, as I also tested pretty late before starting school there. If you're concerned, you should just call and ask...they are very helpful with answering any questions you may have.

As for the essay, I canot tell you what the topic will be...as I'm sure it's different for each groups test. I wouldn't worry though.....it will be some kind of article you'll have to read probably, and then you'll write an essay on what you've read and your opinions. As long as you include an intro. paragraph, a body, and a closing (from what I remember in school) that sounds somewhat intelligent....you'll be fine. I too had been out of school for many years before taking the TEAS, and I'll be graduating (God-willing) Boces in December.

Hi LPNStudent2008,

Thanks for your reply! Really appreciate the little encouragement. Do you know what's the minimum score requirement for different sections of TEAS? For example, Ornage and Ulster BOCES do not count score in Science section and require 70% in English and 50% in Math. Is it similar for Dutchess or different?

so sparkle327 how are you doing in the lpn program now?

Hi I am scheduled to take the entrance exam in May for the Dutchess Boces LPN Program. I was just wondering if anyone out there has done this program part time? I am planning on doing it part-time, I tried to do DCC full-time it was just way too much, I have 2 children and with their busy schedules I was very overwhelmed. Any input would be great! Thanks:)
