I work at a hospital and am in the ADN program at the local community college and about 2wks ago I found out that the director on our med/surg floor let all but 2 LPN's go and was informed that she will not be hiring anymore LPN's. Forturnately the unit I work on has told me that when I get my LPN I will have a spot and not to worry. But it is still scary thinking that if I don't make it to my RN Where do I go from there? anyway I don't understand why they would do that. you can pay an LPN less and most units have to have a charge Nurse anyway. So it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

With the nursing shortage, would it really be "smart" to phase out the LPN's? Kinda stoopid, eh?

I've wondered this for quite some time. Hospitals say they suffering so bad from the nursing shortage and yet make things worse for themselves by not utilizing LPNs the way they could and should.

Are LPNs being phased out? :rotfl:

Sorry.

Yes, our functions have been limited in some ways over the years. But phased out? Nope. Remember! - any facility worth working for will offer assistance to bridge towards an RN if they need you to. I've run into many 'old school' RNs who owe a debt to the LPNs they worked with from the beginning - we do a lot of the hands on, while the knowledge of 'why' is their strength. Makes for a well-rounded team.

If your heart is in pursuing an LPN degree, do it. Why be unhappy with the MA?

A lot of hospitals wont hire LPN's anymore but as far as being phased out, go look at any LTC facility and see how many LPN's are on staff. I think that in itself will answer any questions you might have. As far as being an MA the only thing you can do with that is work in a doctors office, so if all you want to do is height , weight , blood pressure checks and filling out insurance forms then I would say go for it..............

Hello,

I just wrote a post about my decision as far as the LPN program goes. I hope it posts. I have decided to take the LPN route, I did well on my reading test but on the math I failed by 5 points. I will have a tutor and be able to retest in a month and hopefully start the LPN program in September. Thanks for all your responses. I feel more confident in what I am doing now and I'm sure i'll be much more happier in the LPN program than in the MA program. :)

LPNs are sure as heck not being phased out at the LTC where I work. On each station, each LPN (something like three) supervises 3 CNAs. There's an RN or two to each station. The instructor for my CNA class is a supervisor, and she is an LPN (has been for thirty years).

Some lazy advisor doesn't want to do their job but it's easy for them to lie to you. Big fat lie! I should go back to him or her to find documentation of that rumor. Just another ploy, to keep you in that expensive program. Don't be forced to go into a field that you don't like. Talk to a lawyer or check your agreement for a clause to get you out of that program. I would talk to the dean or some higher up about this lie and why this is perpetuated by an advisor. Their job is to guide you to the right path.

In acute care settings in California, LPNs are being phased out...The best bet is in long term care for LPNs in California..

Hi Everyone! I'm new here just wanted to say hello to everyone. I'm from Gulfport Mississippi and LPN's are badly needed here but we are being phased out of hospitals unless you work through an agency and then they'll employ you anyway.
