LPN or ADN?? What should I do???

Published

Hi!! I don't know what to do anymore...2 months ago I thought I would take an LPN Diploma in a private college, then I learned that I needed to take the TEAS exam and score like 90 in science, but I don't have that knowledge yet. So I decided I would take then all the pre-requisits to go for the ADN at Miami Dade College. (This got me so excited) My dream is to become RN

I'm almost 24, married, and jobless...so I thought the LPN would help me find a job soon, after all it only takes a year to complete the program, but like I said I changed my mind because of the TEAS and some other stuff.

Now I was looking into the Miami Dade College web page and I saw that they ask for the TABE Test and to complete the TEAS with a 58% or more (not bad compared to the 90 I had to score for the other school)

So, the LPN could be an option again.

But I don't know what to do...At the end I want to get my BSN sooner than later. So what do you think?

Should I take the LPN course and find a job in a year or so, to later on start all over again to get my ADN? or should I go for the ADN since the beginning and avoid waisting more time? :uhoh3:

Like I said I'm 24...not too old, but when I'm done with everything I'll be like 30 something or older, and I still want to have time to have babies and enjoy my husband and my life (I don't want to start that when I'm 40)

Please help me make my mind up

Thanks for your answers :uhoh3:

I really think thwe better option would be to go ahead and go for the ADN. Unfortunately, it won't be easy to find an LPN job. Most of the hospitals in my area (north fl) are not hiring them. by the time you completed the program and found a job, you probably could be started or maybe even part of the way done with the ADN program. Just my :twocents:

Ditto. In these parts, very few LPNs find work in acute-care settings and there's not much turnover of the LVNs in the SNFs. I'd go straight for your RN (not that jobs are plentiful there, either).

If nursing is what you want then I would skip the LPN and go straight for RN...since you want to eventually go for your BSN anyway. Around here, LPNs are mainly limited to nursing homes and home care. My advice...spend the extra time to go for your RN. Trust me...get it all out of the way before kids! Good luck!

I would think that going for your ADN would be more beneficial in the long run. I know you are young and are jobless and married. I feel that if nothing is holding you back, such as having to care for children, stressful job with mandatory hours, or the likes, then it is best to go for your ADN. (: There will be difficult bridges to cross, both in the LPN and RN programs. But, if you're willing to learn and actually want to become a nurse, then you will not have that hard of a time crossing those bridges. Good luck!

that's exactly what I was going to say!

I started the nursing program when I was 24 at Nova, and life was great. Then I failed, but luckily got accepted to BC and had a baby during the program. I will be 30 in december with my BSN in hand (I am doing RN-BSN at FIU).

so go for it and you can do it. Set your goals and say to yourself that you will be an RN before you are 30!

Yep...you all are right....I'd better do the ADN...Deep down I was hoping you'd advise me to do the RN, but I wanned to see some perpectives first... Your answers are really encoraging...and If my husband doen't like the idea of me taking the long road..I still can blame you... lol :clown:

Thanks :D
