I'm excited, but nervous to start LPN school. I'm attending Louisiana Technical College, June 2010. I got accepted and I start my pre-req computer class and orientation in February. The actual nursing courses start in June. I'm so nervous about the mental math, but I am going to start now to prepare myself and get a head start before June.:paw:

Which campus are you attending? Did you try testing out of the computer class? They didn't tell anyone that you could do this, I just happened to ask. It was $15 to take the test so way cheaper than taking the class! I start in January :) Good luck!
Hi Learninmama, I am attending the college in winnfield,la. Which one are u attending? I did not know anything about testing out of the computer class, and you are right because they sure did not let anyone know. Do you know what classes you are starting out with?
I am attending in Mansfield. First semester classes- Nursing Fundamentals I & II, Geriatric Clinical, Nursing Perspectives, A&P for Healthcare Providers, Nutritional Aspects, & Basic Pharmacology. They told us the entire 2nd semester is all Med Surg over the summer.
I've been studying ahead for A&P and Pharmacology as I hear those are the hardest. Hope it helps me lol. Thankfully I got some great book reccomendations here on allnurses in addition to my text books. The pharmacology books I picked up were far easier to understand than the required text book so hopefully it gives me a leg up lol.
In case you are interested the most helpful books for basic pharm I've seen so far (ordered 7 lol) are-
Math for Meds - Dosages & Solutions - Anna M. Curren
Clinical Calculations - Joyce LeFever Kee & Sally M. Marshall
Matg & Meds for Nurses - Dolores F. Saxton, Norma Ercolano O'Neill, & Colleen Glavinspiehs - This one in particular has some great charts & very helpful info.
I'd call the school to inquire about testing out of the class it's all basic knowledge if you've been online & around computers any length of time you should test out of just fine. Just remember whatever your test out % is will be graded on your report card as well so if you get a lower score you may want to bite the bullet & take the actual class if you want to keep your GPA up.
Ok, thank you so much. I really appreciate your replies because I really do not have anyone that wants to help me out and prepare me for nursing school. I am so afraid of drug calculation class or pharmacology because math is really my weakest point. I don't know how I will do. I am a Licensed Massage Therapist, so I do know a lot of anatomy. Maybe I can get a little break with that...lol!
Well seeing as you have to learn the metric system/conversions I would say your on an even playing field when it comes to pharm & math.
I know I didn't learn anything metric in school lol. I started out with those as I know it's going to be one of the hardest things for myself wrapping my brain around something totally different.
I'm not sure if we all use the same books across LA TC or I'd gladly send you a book list that I got for the 1st semester if you wanted a chance to read them over early.
Hopefull nurse

Hi! I will be applying to Charity's LPN program in May. I am so nervous about applying. I posted here a while back hoping someone else was applying but it seems no one is.
Anyway, I am taking Intro to Anatomy and Physiology this upcoming semester. What do you guys suggest I do to better prepare myself? I have already passed the Tabe exam and will have all the requirements to apply by May.
To practice for A&P I've been reviewing the required textbooks as well as started on Barron's Anatomy Flash Cards and Super Review book by The Staff of Research & Education Association. Hope this helps!!
Hey guys! Learninmama, I would love for you to send me a list of the books. RN Hopefull, Anatomy and Physiology is going to be easy if you make flashcards on your own. Shorten the definitions down to the most important information only, because there is just so much to learn. I learned that from Massage Therapy school, and it really helped me out. I did the same thing for Medical Terminology as well. I also made sure to keep viewing all of the cards throughout semesters because they are easy to forget.
Sent to your email. I am a flashcard nut too lol. I made flashcards for all the chapters in my fundamentals so far & am working on another book now. I figure it will save me alot of time once class actually starts...thats the theory anyways lol.
They have some pretty cool charts on amazon-
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=Quick+Study+Academic&x=20&y=23
I ordered a few different ones at they are in their 4 for 3 promo area. Will let you know if they are worth anything when they show up in a few days lol.
Great! Yeah, I think I am going to start making them early as well. I think it is a good idea as many nursing student's feel that they have not learned anything once they finish school. I think that the both of us will make awesome nurses! Let's keep in touch and help eachother througout school!
Sounds great & you should have my email now lol. I am sure we both will really need someone else who understands what we are doing/going through lol.
I got some nifty organizers for my cards as I figure then I can add to them by subject & they will be great resources that I can hold on to in case I ever need to brush up on anything once I'm done :) Glad I'm not the only flashcard nut lol.
