Beware OLOL Accelerated ASN

U.S.A. Louisiana

This may burst the bubble of people who are considering OLOL College Accelerated Nursing Program but it is crazy hard and if you don't get through that pharm with an 80 (also the semester is 20 days long) they will boot you out without a backward glance and a month later you will get a bill for $2000. Not to mention that now you have a nursing failure on your record, if you want to go somewhere else. 75% of the class that started originally was put out. Not nice.

Thanks and congratulations on your acceptance!

Congrats on your accomplishment!!

What hospital did you go through? East Jeff or Tulane? Did you go 10 mos or 9 mos?

Thank You. Went to school at EJGH campus. Did clinicals at a variety of hospitals, including East Jeff, West Jeff, Children's, Ochsner...and Mental Health Nursing at River Oaks. Program is 10 mos - in my opinion it should be longer. They don't spend much time on pharm and that's all of our weakness right now.

Hi kitt419,

I am starting OLOL-BR accelerated in Sept. How is studying for the NCLEX going? Any jobs prospects yet? Just trying to get a "feel" for what to expect.

Thanks!

just took our final today - many still have clinical hours to complete. So far nothing on the horizon, but it's just a matter of looking and getting the resume out there I hope! Good luck.

Good luck to u! What about the NCLEX? Thanks for responding.

They have a program called Virtual ATI to help with the NCLEX. We took a comp predictor test to see how ready we were and then there is a focused review which will supposedly help to prepare for the NCLEX. ATI tells you when you are ready. There is a HURST review in Baton Rouge Aug 9-12 (I think) also. I took it before starting and may just take it again b/c you can go to 2 live reviews in one year for one fee. If not, I'll do the online lectures. After our final grades are sent to the state board we get the go-ahead to take boards.

Hope that helps.

Hello to everyone! Is there anyone out there from previous accelerated classes willing to share their experiences?

I took accelerated RN.. It was hell. It was short but very difficult. I've been a practicing RN now for almost 9 months on a busy med/surg/ortho/neuro unit. I have taken care of up to 7 patients now simultaneously, of various acuity. Sometimes I get overwhelmed, but it is rare. I learned good things at OLOL. I didn't learn EVERYTHING. How can anyone? It's so short. I feel like I missed some things, but I also feel like some really important concepts stuck. If you go, try to get a clinical instructor that is actually a practicing nurse - makes a huge difference to your feeling of readiness. Really fight to get with the best teachers for clinicals and maximize your experience. Some teachers are afraid to let you go out on a limb. I put down an NG tube on one of our 1st rotations. Be as hands on as you can where appropriate. The tests are hard but you just have to study, study, study, and when you get tired of studying, study some more. We all take the same NCLEX. PS - I worked the entire time, and I have small children at home. Time management in your personal life will flow to time mgmt in school and nursing, and time management the key to success in nursing, coupled with attention to detail (not one of my strengths) and plain old instinct. It's been pretty cool.

I realize that time management will be a HUGE part in succeeding in this program. I am really excited about getting started. Which cohort were you in? I'm pretty sure they are run similarly. Did you prepare any? Or would you recommend preparing?

yes I bought the pharm book ahead of time and started reading!

I just got booted from LSUE for the math section. Needed a 90 and got an 80. I've never been this depressed over an 80 in my life. I also hope I dont' get a bill other than the $3000 I already put out. It was the math exam. It should be a pre-requisit so that those who don't pass don't have to pay all the fees, physicals, etc....
