Published

Hello all, is anybody applying to Los Medanos CC for fall 2011. I just sent in my application with my fingers crossed:up:

Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great day?

That's great that you already met a few of the others. Will be nice to meet those we will be spending the next 2 years with!

Happy birthday! Hope it was awesome!

This summer, I am just working to pass the time and to be able to pay for all of my books and supplies.

I wonder why we have to register in person. I actually attempted to register online (I received the registration email before I got my packet this weekend, so I did not know that this is what they were asking), and I was actually able to successfully register. I'll still go in in person just to make sure everything goes through.

I was able to register in early June without going in to campus. My packet (which I got in May) mentioned nothing about having to register in person. I had spoken to Sue in the registration/admission back in May, she did not mention anything either, about having to register in person. I have my confirmation and class schedule so I hope I am not missing something. Did you packets say it HAD to be done in person?

Hey, DReinerMBA,

I got your message, and I will definitely pass on what I learn when I call tomorrow. I have come to the conclusion that our packets are definitely different because it does state in ours that you need to go to the registration office to sign up, and specifically says you can't register online. Also, there is no mention in my packet that CPR must be through AHA. Doesn't mean you shouldn't go through AHA because I know I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't, but it is just to show you the differences in our packet.

I will be making a call tomorrow as well. I did register and pay for my classes online. I wonder why the changes suddenly. Strange! Thanks for your info.

So, the nursing dept called me back this AM, and they said it is OK to register online. Our packets specifically say that we need to register "in person" because admissions had contacted them at some point telling them this, but later retracted this statement. However, our packets were never corrected.

Also, our CPR card does NOT have to be through AHA (although, I would highly encourage this for anyone who hasn't received it yet). It just needs to be BLS for 2 years. The reason why I asked was because mine is BLS through RedCross, and I technically have another year before I need to update....I don't want to have to spend extra $$$ at this moment if I don't have to - those books are expensive!

BTW, has anyone else begun ordering books online? I don't care to have the e-book, so I am just going for it. Buh-bye, summer paychecks!

Nikki,

Thanks for the updated info. Saves me a trip all the way to Pittsburg! I have a letter from the nursing department stating the CPR must be for the "professional rescurer" which mine is, as well as being BCLS and 2 year. I am in the same boat as you, mine does not expire until June 2012, so will wait as well until next year to renew.

I had bought several of the books already. The Fundamentals book and the EVOLVE 2 year license which was MUCH cheaper going through Barnes and Noble. I also ordered the Davis Drug Guide, and a few others I cannot remember (at work at the moment) but they were ALL cheaper than the bookstore. There was also a student last year that recommended Abebooks.com which I looked at as well, also pretty good prices. Since I like the idea of having the ebooks, I will most likely buy the bundle. I will have an extra Fundamentals book and the EVOLVE and would be happy to sell it for what I paid, if anyone is interested.

Thanks again for checking the online registration out. I really appreciate it!

See you on the 23rd!

Hello Everyone!! Does anyone knows what comes in the Lab Kit? I am going to order mines next week; not really in a hurry to order it since they are not shipping them until July 16. Also, has anyone began the Online Clinical Orientation program yet, if yes, how is it? I think I am going to start tomorrow. The only thing I am worried about is the physical. I could not get an appt with my doctor until next Monday. I am going to keep calling this week to see if anyone cancels. I want to get started on those immunizations, as some of them are in a sequence and require a waiting period in between.

Hope everyone enjoys their holiday!!

I ordered mine early June and i believe it has gloves, bandage scissors, and I cannot remember the rest. I did all 3 online modules. They are pretty easy. Basic hazardous waste handling stuff, safe handling practice, fire protocol, hand washing and basic stuff. Also, you should have received an appointment for you mask fitting for our isolation respirator. It costs 20.00 and says it is a mandatory appt and if you do not show up, you COULD lose you spot in the program. Were getting closer to being official nursing students! Even for an old lady like me, it is exciting!

Hope your having a great summer!

LaRhonda,

You should try to get some immunization titers, which proves you have either been immunized or exposed. It will save you a few shots! Check with your doc, if he sees the list he could help. I had titers for Mumps, measles and rubella (mmr) and varicella which I had not had in over 35 years. Positive titers mean no need for more shots. Strangely, I had the hepatitis series only 14 years ago, but it came up negative. Had to get the Tdap and new hep vaccine...luckily on two shots...2nd hep one due to get on July 30....What fun!

I recently learned from a nurse that it is not unusual for Hep B titers to show up as a false negative, especially in people over 40. That's why proof of vaccination in itself is all that is necessary.

If you don't want to wait that long, and you do choose to pull some titers, county clinics are often available to do this, and it is for a low cost - or so I have been told (I'm lucky in that my workplace pulled my titers already - for free! Yay!)

If anyone does the online orientation soon, could you let me know if the computer saves your certificate or if you have to print it out right then and there. I won't have access to a printer until later this week, which is why I ask, but I would like to get it done!

Thanks!

I went back and logged in and was able to view my certificates, so you should be able to print when your able. FYI, there is a new combined hepatitis vaccine, if you do need it. I had the old Hep B three series, which was what they gave healthcare workers years ago. I went ahead and got the new one, which is a two vaccine series instead of three, and our program will accept it.:nurse::nurse:
