Looking for a Nursing Mentor in NY

Hello all,

I've been taking my pre-reqs and will soon be enrolled in the process courses hopefully by the fall. I'm going after my A.S. RN and have many questions. I was hoping someone might be willing to be a mentor to me and lead me in the right route. I have found that there are many different roads to take and it would be a great help if I knew someone that already traveled the road towards there license.

If interested let me know!

Heres a little info about myself. My name is Tim, i'm 26 and live in NY. I have an A.A. in general education never got the bachlors becuase i never knew what I wanted to do ( I have about 90 credits in 3 majors...). I currently work as a residence manager of a group home and I have been the manager for a little over a year and prior to that I was an assistant manager. I have been in this field since I was 19. I have a great desire to care for people in need. I can't see myself living for my job or just doing my job to make money.

I am sitting on the edge of my seat to get my RN license and I know it will be amazing to actually help people and not push papers around all day.

I look foward towards all of your input.

Thanks

Tim

I am an LPN that resides in New York; got my license in June, 2006. Not sure if you are interested in my path to nursing, since your current course of study will be towards a higher license than mine, but I would be willing to answer your questions if you wish. I laugh when you say that you would like to actually help people and not push papers all day, because you will be doing a great deal of patient care as well as paper-pushing. In fact, the papers actually get in the way of patient care. But, you'll see that along the way or when you begin the actual job.

Good luck in your road to a new career!

I could use all the help i can get. I don't even know what field I would like to be involved with. The body just amazes me. Every new thing I learn about how it takes care of itself I'm just in awe. What part of NY are you from?

Thanks

Tim

You can PM me and I'll share what area I am close to. It will take time to choose what field in nursing is best for you, because (especially for RNs), the opportunities would be vast. Maybe by the time you complete your program and have experienced your clinicals, you will have a better idea of what area will suit you. Currently, I am working in a clinic. It is overwhelming to me, but at the same time, I enjoy patient teaching. I also do home care occasionally, a vaccination nurse and plan to work med-surg per diem in a few weeks. I have not had a loss of money or opportunities to learn.

The human body amazes me as well. Now that school is over and I don't have the pressure, I take time to read my anatomy textbooks to further comprehend how the human body works.
