Hi, just wanted to start a post about my process of applying at lonestar. Hope to hear from other applicants! I have just taken my HESI and will be applying for the spring semester with a score of 11.54
For what its worth; here is the breakdown for CyFair's Orientation (taken from the orientation I attended this summer) It will probably be the same guidelines for the Kingwood campus, times and details will be different of course. Take this with a grain of salt and merely utilize it as a heads up for what to expect.
0900-0910 - Welcome and Introduction
0910-0945 - Academic Integrity/Library Services
0945-1000 - Confidentiality
1000-1010 - Counseling, Career and Disability Services
1010-1020 - Break
1020-1100 - Paying for School - Financial Aid, Scholarships, and Loans
1100-1115 - Raffle
1115-1230 - Lunch
1230-1500 - Program Specific Orientation - School and Dept. Policies, Student Nursing Handbook, Q&A
I'll also give you a heads up that if you've gone out to buy scrubs, shoes, stethoscopes, etc; keep the receipts. Scrubs are color coded depending on the campus you attend and what program you are in, etc and are subject to change. A lot of students purchased single headed stethoscopes, its recommended to use a dual head (Bell/Diaphragm i.e. Littmann Classic II SE). Get a decent analog watch that you won't mind getting bodily fluids on (Timex, Casio, nothing flashy) And shoes must be all white, leather with white non-marking soles. I have New Balance Walking Shoes (Houston Outlets on 290, $50), and they fit the bill and are acceptable by Lone Star standards, Nike Air Force Is don't cut it...
They make the New Balance 577 for Men and Women; it's what I'm wearing for clinicals/labs now. Granted, they're not stylish, but I could not find legitimate nursing shoes locally in my size and I don't buy shoes online unless I can try them on locally for proper fitment (My feet have been through hell and back in the military) I chose walking shoes over running shoes, because running shoes are cushioned to absorb the impact of your foot/body weight striking the ground. As a student nurse you will be on your feet all day, but not running marathons, thus the walking shoe is designed for low impact with proper arch support. Yes, they look like old-man shoes, but we're not trying to win any fashion awards here...
Of course, I'll drop some serious $$$ on quality shoes when I'm licensed and employed, because then you're not constrained to white leather.
In regards to scrubs on the other hand, guys scrubs shoot for Dickies, Cherokee, or for me, my go-to brand is Carhartt scrubs, especially with cargo pockets on the pants, pockets are your friend when a student nurse.
For women, I'd recommend the Dickies Gen Flex scrubs (Also with cargo pants). Everyone raves about the Grey's Anatomy, but this is school and its about utility not fashion.
And everything I've mentioned, you can purchase locally at the uniform stores in the Katy Mills Mall and the Houston Premium Outlets on 290; Amazon is also you friend, but its best to try the stuff on to get sizing first; plus, supporting your local business is beneficial for the community.
Just my $0.02, but I'm also not one to hold back the punches and I call things like I see them.
