Lone Star Spring 2011

Published

Okay, for all of us that did not get into the Lone Star Fall 2010 program and are trying again for the Spring...here we go again.

I'm retaking AP2 this summer (I have a B so now I want an A) to increase my points. After that I just don't know what else to do because I have all co-reqs completed, CPR done and Immunizations done. What are your plans to increase your chances of getting in for the Spring?

kingwood only admits once a year where cyfair admits twice a year.

that's not necessarily true. some of us are waiting for the quest program, which is on its own schedule. unfortunately we don't know when it will be available again.

what are people doing now, as in the period after completing the adn prerequisites but before starting nursing school? i'm taking the prerequisites for bsn programs. i just completed philosophy (for ut houston) and am taking nutrition (for several different schools) right now.

did you know that the university of texas at arlington offers online versions of every bsn prerequisite? http://stateu.com/uta/programinfo.aspx?id=260 they offer mostly 5 week courses which start throughout the year.

I am having a terrible anxiety fit! The last few nights I have been restless and totally biting my nails!

I have been praying and trying to figure out if I need to re-take the HESI after seeing all of these great scores for Kingwood before the end of the week??? (me: 11.652)

Anyone else feeling the squeeze with the application period ending next week??? Oh, not to mention Pharm starting this week as well :uhoh3: Or is it just me being neurotic???!?!

I think you'll be fine with that score. On the last application period, I telephoned the woman who sent the letters out and she told me the cut off was 11.3. I could see the cut off going up a bit, but not certainly not that much. Just try to relax :) I'm more concerned now about getting a job after graduation. Some of the posts I'm reading on here are getting me a bit worried about the job prospects for new grads. Hopefully the economy will be getting better by that time and people will be hiring new grads again.

Thank you, FruityPebble - I have a bit of anxiety and tend to worry a lot...being a single mom, I'm always worrying about something. I just get so mad at myself for not studying ahead of time...I went in blind just to get a feel for the test, and I wanted to have your score!!! :yeah:

I keep telling myself I'm not going to look at this board anymore until the application period ends, but I can't help myself :p And now that it's down to the wire I am overly stalking the scores. I don't want to have to wait until next year to do all of this again.

And I hear you about getting a job after...at this point, I'll change bed pans just to get my foot in the door! I've done worse with animals and I'm used to having any kind of poop on me now-a-days :D

You are welcome ;)

Yes, emptying bed pans does not sound bad compared to the alternative LOL

I've had mixed feelings about posting scores. I was afraid that this would cause needless worrying for some. But I also see value in giving a reality check to people with an 11.2 or less. I hope there is value in applicants knowing that there are real people who make high scores. It shows that high scores are attainable.

Some of us have had private discussions about cut scores. We regard it as unfortunate that some applicants don't actually know what it takes to get admitted. If you haven't completed at least 27 hours of prerequisites, you are not going to be admitted. Period. Do the math. Not even FruityPebble with a perfect reading score can get admitted with less than 27 hours of prerequisites. If you haven't made A in English, intro psyc, and at least one anatomy course, you have only two chances, slim and none. Do the math.

Quest cut scores are higher than for the tradtional classroom based programs. Last year the Quest cut score was 11.6, as reported in an information session.

You really need to go with what the people in the Lone Star nursing program tell you. If you ask what the cut scores were for the last few years, they will tell you. You should relax.

jpchouston-which info session did you attend? I attended the July 1 session at Kingwood and I don't remember them telling a cut score on either the day/night program or the Quest program. Do fill me in :D

I will *try* to relax...my application is in and there's no turning back now!

Forgive my neurotic brain and my rambling, but nobody in my family understands the pressure of scores!!!

Jennifer, I completely get where you are coming from and it is hard to hear "you have no reason to stress". It IS stressful especially for those of us who are sitting near the estimated cut off. Reality is that we DON'T know what the cut off is going to be this year and the scores definitely seem much higher than previous years. (I hope you are right FruityPebble, that they won't go up too much higher than last time)

All of us have put a ton of effort into this and now that we are down to the wire, anxiety definitely sets in at a much higher level. I took a chance and quit my very well paying job for this and cut our family income nearly in half. If I don't get in I have pretty much screwed my family so when I hear "don't stress" it honestly does no good.

Either way, I am trying to fill this anxiety ridden month by getting ready for our big annual Halloween party (party planning always seems to calm me down), studying for my CNA exam, and taking my last pre-req (Micro). I'm just hoping I keep myself busy enough to make this next month fly right on by. :)

Dido, my score was also bugging me and kept me up at night so I called the nursing dept @Cyfair to get some clarification on retaking the Hesi. The director informed me that we can only take the Hesi test ONE time during the application period. She also said that retaking it so close together would give an "unfair advantage to some, and we're keeping a watchfull eye on those applications that do not follow the rules." Furthermore she went on to say " young lady I suggest you don't retake it, I would'nt want your papers getting screwed up." I was going to retake my Hesi, however; after this conversation i'm going to take my chances with my score. Call the nursing dept and see what they advise you to do. It doesn't hurt to ask, after all they don't know who the person on the line is and you might get a different answer. Once you get a definite answer im sure you will be able to relax knowing there's nothing more that can be done. Hope this helps.:):):)

I go every month.

Thanks, Kyla! You definitely put it in perspective saying we have all worked really hard and our families depend on us! This forum is the only place I have to vent and where some others may have the same feelings. I sure hope the month goes by quickly. And how fun...Halloween parties! BTW-how is your CNA class going?

fabjulev-I can't believe they said they were "keeping a watchful eye!" That sounds scary! And I think I will call and ask...however, the person answering the phone never seems too happy to hear from us.

It's just getting down to the nitty gritty and we've all worked our tails off to get to this part :D
