Our hospital pharmacy recently advised us that she was unable to purchase bottles of liquid thorazine because the manufacturer was no longer producing it.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? If not - do you know where your hospital purchases its CPZ? I am having a hard time envisioning not having CPZ (Liquid anyway) available as a PRN. Any thoughts or comments ?

(Sorry - I've been dumping it in the water supply at work - it takes a lot to get a therapeutic dilution... )
Seriously, tho, I guess it's a difference in facility, but I couldn't tell you when I've see thorazine used last. If it's not manfactured anymore, it's probably because they're not making any money off of it.

We also cannot get liquid Thorazine, only the pills. I prefer the liquid, works much faster.

Thorazine (Thioridazine) was effectively withdrawn from use in the UK in 2001, due to its rare but significant cardiotoxic effects. Only for use as a second line treatment for psychosis, not for anxiety or the elderly. I haven't seen it around since then..

I think thorazine is called chlorpromazine over here Don. As one of the older antipsychs, I really can't remember when I saw it last used - ages and ages ago.

Mallorol as its called in Sweden was taken off the market here last summer, probably only a matter of time before it disappears all over the shop

Thorazine, Thioridazine, Melleril... is out of the picture here in NSW Australia too.... as it should be.. there are many more less problematic antipsychotics available. The only time it is used is if a client requests it because they feel it benefits them.
That is'nt to say that all of the older antipsychotics are bad, in fact Haloperidol has been given a new lease of life in recent best practice guidelines as the best for use in rapid tranquillisation, and of course the eternal chlorpromazine is still widely used to help a client maintain control.
