Licensure by endorsement from NY to California, do I need SSS number?

Published

Good day!

I am an International Nclex-RN passer, and is currently licensed and registered in New York State. I would like to apply for an RN license in CALIFORNIA by Endorsement. Is it possible for me to apply a license by endorsement without an SSS number? Kindly advise. Your reply will be very much appreciated.

Thank you and more power! :redbeathe

Why don't you ask the CA Board of Nursing?

Specializes in Telemetry.

I was gonna suggest the same, check with the CA BRN you can also do it online.

I do believe CA requires you to have a SSN in order to process your application. When I applied for my license by examination they wanted a SSN and if you didn't have it you couldn't sit for the NCLEX. But it might be different if you're applying by endorsment.

to work in the us, one must have a social security number--otherwise, how would one file a us tax return. i also believe, one must show a valid social security card as part of the validation to get a job in the us. if you do not have one, it is very easy to obtain. go to social security on line and provide valid identification evidence or go into the ss office. the card will be sent to you. calif may also require fingerprints.

I do believe CA will going to ask for your SSN before they process your endorsment papers. They are not going to release the License Number and License card without the SSN.

answer to your question: no. i am providing the online calif bon site. as i thought, you must have a ss # otherwise you cannot work in the us, and you must submit fingerprints, which requires your social security number--among other items.

licensure by endorsement

to qualify for endorsement (reciprocity) into california as a rn, you must:

- hold a current and active license in another state or canada,

- have completed an educational program meeting all california requirements, and

- have passed national council licensure examination (nclex-rn) or the state board test pool examination (sbtpe). the canadian comprehensive examination is not acceptable.

if you do not possess these qualifications, you do not qualify for licensure by endorsement and must apply to take the examination instead.

all applicants must provide the following:

- appropriate fees.

- completed application for licensure by endorsement.

- completed fingerprints using either the live scan process or the applicant fingerprint card (hard card) processing method as directed in the "instructions for submitting fingerprint cards". submit the appropriate nonrefundable total fee as directed on the application fee schedule.

note: application does not include fingerprint cards or live scan form. fingerprint cards and livescan forms may be requested on the requests page.

- one recent 2" x 2" passport-type photograph.

- completed verification of license form or nursys® verification request application if your board of nursing participates in nursys® . international graduates must also submit license verification from the board of nursing where the examination was taken.

- request for transcript form(s) completed and forwarded directly from the nursing school(s) with certified transcripts.

- if applicable, documents and/or letters explaining prior convictions or disciplinary action and attesting to your rehabilitation as directed in section ii of the general information and instructions.

click here for additional information for applicants with criminal convictions or discipline

- temporary license form (optional) if you wish to begin work pending issuance of a permanent license. applicants wishing to obtain a temporary license on a walk-through basis, see minimum requirements for a temporary license to be issued at the board office.

note: the board makes every effort to process temporary licenses on a same day basis; however, due to the high volume of applications, we may not be able to issue a temporary license on the same day.

in addition for international applicants:

- send breakdown of educational program for international nursing programs form to your school with the request for transcript form. also provide the certified english translation form to your certified translator if your transcript is not in english. (see the supplemental application instructions for international graduates section of the application.)

how do i apply for a social security number and card?

unless you are a noncitizen who wants to work in the united states, you probably do not need a social security number.

generally, only noncitizens authorized to work in the united states by the department of homeland security (dhs) can get a social security number. social security numbers are used to report an individual’s wages to the government and to determine a person’s eligibility for social security benefits. you need a social security number to work, collect social security benefits and receive some other government services.

lawfully admitted noncitizens can get many benefits and services without a social security number. you do not need a number to get a driver’s license, register for school, obtain private health insurance, or to apply for school lunch programs or subsidized housing.

some organizations use social security numbers to identify you in their records. most, however, will identify you by some other means if you request it.

we cannot assign you a social security number solely so you can get a driver’s license or a service that requires a credit check.

although many companies, such as banks and credit companies, may ask for your social security number, you are generally not required to provide one if you don’t have one.

how can i get a social security number and card?

there are two ways you can apply:

•you can apply in your home country before you come to the united states when filing an application for an immigrant visa with the u.s. department of state. in almost all cases, if you apply for a social security number and card with your immigrant visa application, you do not have to visit a social security office in the united states. (for more information, see www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnvisa); or

•you can visit a social security office in person.

if you are not an immigrant or did not apply for a social security number on your immigrant visa application, you must have your papers from dhs showing your u.s. immigration status and authorization to work in the united states. then you should apply for a social security number and card by visiting an office. we recommend you wait 10 days after arriving in the united states to apply for a social security number. this will make it easier for us to verify your dhs documents online, which will speed processing of your social security number application. applying for a social security number and card is free. to apply:

•complete an application for a social security card (form ss-5);

•show us at least two original documents proving your:

◦identity and immigration status,

◦work eligibility and

◦age; and

•take your completed application and original documents to your local social security office.

all documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. we cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. we also cannot accept a receipt showing you applied for the document.

social security numbers for noncitizens http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10096.html

we may use one document for two purposes. for example, we may use your dhs work permit as proof of both your identity and work-authorized immigration status. your birth certificate or passport may serve as proof of age. however, you must provide at least two separate documents.

we will mail your number and card as soon as we have all of your information and have verified your documents with the issuing offices.
