License suspension/going to school

Published

I received some paperwork in the mail from the state boards saying that I needed to complete all these drug related programs because of an incident where I was accused of stealing hydrocodone but I tested positive for Xanax but I didn't have a prescription for it because my mom had gave me one of hers the night before. They also fined me $1000 and put me on probation. I'm currently not working and I'm a full time student. I'm in school working toward my RN. I don't have the money to do all these things right now and I'm also under drs care for a back condition so I'm scared my Dr will get scared and take my off of my medication so I was going to give up my LPN license. My question is, how hard will it be and what will the process be when I go to apply for a RN license when I finish school? Or will I be going to school for nothing?

If the BON fined you and ordered you to complete mandatory educaction, and you fail to comply, they are likely not going to l8cense you as an RN. Particularly if you have been suspended. I would suspect that you would find it .difficult to be licensed in another state as well.

In my oponion, your best course of action would be to contact the BON regarding this.

Best wishes as you work through this issue.

You can check out the many threads on AN that deal with this general issue, but ultimately you must deal with your Board, as all cases are dealt with on an individual basis. Strongly advise you not to voluntarily surrender your LPN license. You also should notify your nursing program.

Typically, disciplinary actions against one license will have an affect on any other license, whether in the same state or in another. In fact, besides drugs/alcohol or criminal activities, the next most common reason listed for actions against licenses in my state are disciplinary actions against my state's license due to actions taken against another state's license. It would most likely be in your best interests to do what you need to do to meet the requirements of paying the fine and completing the probation, even if it would mean leaving school for the time being.

I don't understand how, if your LPN license is on probation, you can continue in the RN program. However, even if the school allows you to go on, you most likely will not get an RN license unless you comply with the BON conditions for your LPN license.

^^ This. Every LPN ->RN program I'm aware requires that you have a valid, active LPN license in order to be eligible for the program. If you lose your license, you can't continue in the program. Not to mention issues that will raise about licensure if you finish school.

Either find a way to get the money or find a different career. I know someone who got in trouble with the board & the actions that were taken against her LVN license also were taken against her RN permit/license. Don't make this more complicated than it needs to be.

Could there also be clinical facilities that may NOT approve students such as OP to do their rotations in the institution?

I believe that to do so without the facility's knowledge might jeopardize future clinical site contracts with the school.

You don't have to be a LPN to be in the RN program. I am not sure if they'll let me apply to enter the RN program though because I'm sure it asks if you had a license suspended or something along those lines. I may be able to come up with the money and I may be able to do the evaluation but I can't afford to do the drug screenings and what's the point if I am on medication for back issues right now? I'm also afraid that my Dr, being a new Dr on her own, may discharge me because she may get scared about all of this and I'll have to start all over with my treatments and trying to get a MRI. I'm trying to figure out what to do because I'm stuck. I'm a single mom and I can't afford to lose my license. I'm working too hard to lose everything.

You've got a lot going on, but it seems that you need qualified legal assistance, and we can't provide legal advice.
