License expired can take state boards again?

If your RN license has expired, you typically don't need to retake the NCLEX (state boards) to reactivate it. The first thing to do is check with your state's Board of Nursing.

Most states offer specific processes to reinstate an expired license, which might include:

  • Completing a refresher course. Many states require you to complete an approved RN refresher course that often includes both didactic and clinical components.
  • Continuing education: You might be required to complete a certain number of continuing education (CE) hours.
  • Paying a reinstatement fee. There is usually a fee associated with reinstating an expired license.
  • Fulfilling any other state-specific requirements. Each state has different requirements, so you'll need to check with your state's nursing board for the exact process.

However, if your license has been expired for an extended period, the requirements may be more extensive, and in rare cases, retaking the NCLEX could be a possibility, though it's usually a last resort.

Best wishes,
