Library/Reference Access for Community Hospitals

Published

Hi All,

What does your facility do to provide access to journals or other online references for NURSING? I was lucky enough to have access to Ovid and CINAHL while in school. Now that I am done I can no longer access them. Our hospital does subscribe to up to date which is great for medical information, but is not a good source for references for nusring policies, for example. Most of the books I use are my own. We are in a budget crunch right now, so i am looking for some creative and cost conscious solutions.

Medscape for Nursing and the Library of Congress are free.

I would also recommend MedScape. I am fortunate enough to work for an organization with access to both OVID and Mosby's Nusing Consult... very good references. Have you gotten a bid from EBSCO? They are very reasonable, especially for smaller organizations.

Thanks to both of you. I do like Medscape. I even thought about purchasing my own (individual) access to Mosby Consult. I had trouble finding which journals were included in the 37 they say you will be able to access. I do need some med surg materials, but mostly MAT and PEDS. IF I could do a PhD one course at a time, I'd be happpy to re-enroll in a university and take my time to work on it. (That would get my library access back!) I may do it someday, but not yet. Everyone wants you to be in a cohort group and take several courses at a time, so I will have to free up some time to take that challenge on. It certainly was heaven having access to OVID during school.

The university from which I received my graduate degree allows lifetime access to former grad students. I use it.
