Today we had this huge staff meeting and right in the middle of it, the care manager's cell rings. (I work in LTC). it was one of the LPN's in a panic because the paramedic's were called b/c of one of the residents. anyways i am not sure of what excatly happened but apparently the paramedics possibly revived or intubated this resident against level of intervention orders. This resident had been spiking a temp even after tylenol was given and their o2 sats were in the low 80's with 4 liters of O2 but his MD came by yester day and was like " I will come back tomorrow and assess him while he is laying down". takes 2 seconds to lay him down. ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :angryfire well I won't find out what hapeened exactly until later this wek after my days off :stone

What is level or intervention? Is that a DNR order in Canada or something similar? Why were the paramedics called if he wasn't to be revived? That is where your problem lies in most cases.

Was this patient a DNR who should not have been intubated?
in canada we have levels of intervention
Supportive / comfort measures (basically control pain, give O2,oral fluids)
Minimal / some meds that can be given at the facility
Maximum/ hospitalization but no ICU measures.
MICU/ ICU if condition warrants including life support
of course the things that are required vary waether if is a reversible illness or not for example my level of intervention would probably look like this:
Reversible illnesses (infections, fractures etc) MICU
Irrieversible illness (Terminal cancer, severe stroke etc) Supportive
CPR
I do believe this resident was maximal but not MICU which means that EMS cannot intubate and they did anyways. I is A HUGE thing at our facility we don't acutally provide CPR to the residents we call 911. So yeah someone is going to be in trouble.
The staff meeting was so we all could get layoff notices as our bosses contract waas terminated
because the LPN left on the floor is not too bright.
If the nurse did not tell them, then who is to blame? And]\\if medics get called for a code, they are going to do what needs to be done to get that patient back........
It sounds more like facility problems, rather than anything else.
