Wanted to let you know that the following news will be posted in this week's NASN School Nurse Digest electronic newsletter. Having the ratio piece included in Chairman Miller's substitute amendment for health reform is a significant accomplishment for school nurses. As the process moves along, we'll need support from the "masses" to do our best to keep the provision alive.

Reducing Student-to-School Nurse Ratios Being Addressed in Health Reform Legislation

In the House of Representatives' process of "marking up" America's Affordable Health Choices Act (H.R. 3200), Rep. George Miller, Chairman of the Education and Labor Committee, has included a version of Rep. Carolyn McCarthy's ratio bill (H.R. 2703) in his "substitute amendment." Stay tuned for more information on the ratio provisions as H.R. 3200 makes its way through the House.

Please note that Senator Charles Schumer from NY has introduced S. 2750 - the Student-to-School Nurse Ratio Improvement Act of 2009. It is very similar to Rep. McCarthy's House bill - H.R. 2730. Please spread the word about the bill's introduction and ask your Senators to co-sponsor. Here is a link for more information: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/thomas
