Laser Hair Removal Providers

Published

I am considering a position with a major laser hair removal company. Just wondering if there are any NPs on this forum who perform laser hair removal? How do you like your job? What kind of hourly rate do you make? Are there any major issues with the Medical Director? Thanks for any input you may have!!!

I worked as a licensed esthetician for a few years before starting nursing school, and I used to work for a cosmetic laser clinic doing hair removal, tattoo removal, skin rejuvination, etc. It honestly isn't hard work, and it definitely does not require one to be an NP (or even a nurse, for that matter!). Does this company plan to have you do other cosmetic procedures in addition to the hair removal (like fillers or botox, etc.)? If not I can't imagine that you'd be satisfied doing just laser hair removal--it is seriously beneath your educational and skill level as an NP. I used to make $15/hr doing it, which obviously would be a ridiculous salary to offer an NP. Just my two cents.

This company is strictly laser hair, medical clearance for laser hair, follow-up, and writing prescriptions for emla cream, some abx, etc. They pay 40 plus an hour for part-time. Mostly PAs and some NPs there needed for medical clearance per state Medical Board rules, no director/MD on site. I am afraid it may be boring.

That's 40 dollars and hour. Oops.

Yeah, it honestly IS pretty boring. :) I can't speak to what kind of laser hair removal the clinic you are talking about does, but in my experience I really think a 3rd grader could have done my job. The only skills involved were entering the appropriate settings into the laser and pulling the "trigger". Maybe a little patient education about avoiding sun exposure and that kind of thing. The hardest thing (again, just my opinion) about working in this type of industry is that it tends to be HEAVY on sales. I hate selling, and I hate trying to convince people to buy hair removal packages. If you do end up taking the job (which pays pretty well, by the way! $40/hr is good, I think!) you might want to clarify what the expectations are as far as sales go. Maybe that kind of thing would fall under someone else's job description, but I'd want to be sure I understood how much of the job involved sales.

Thanks for the input!!! Yes, I did ask about sales like you said, it isn't really my ideal place to be a 'sales person' here. They do have an initial visit with a sales consultant and then once they discuss price, etc and THEN they see the NP/PA for medical clearance (or not). I would hope this makes it easier in a lot of ways. Thank you again for your help!!
