Just wanted to see if anyone here has gone/is going to Gateway in Kenosha. I am wondering what the clinical rotation is like. Feel free to PM me anytime!

Hi, I am currently at Gateway tech and i start clinicals this january. I am really excited bc i have been trying to get into clinicals for a while now. I actually went to uw-madison for prenursing right out of high school then came back to go to parkside but that program is ridiculous and they only take about 20 students out of over 100 that apply. I plan to finish clinicals through gtc then go back to uwp to get my bachelor's (it's only 6 more credits). If you have any other ?s let me know!

I graduated from Gateway, I really enjoyed the clinical rotation's. I enjoyed my third semester experience so much that I inquired about a position and was offered a full time nursing job before I had even finished school. I feel confident that I received a very well rounded education especially when speaking with other graduates from different colleges.
Hope this helps,

Clinicals were okay I learned more working at a Kenosha Hospital as a SNI while finishing school than I did at school. I felt that the Theory classes aren’t the best but I made it through and passed boards the 1st time. I work with others that are at GTC and are very frustrated w/the program they’re intelligent people but feel like I did ,that GTC raises the standards all the time but doesn’t teach the students the tools or methods to meet the standards.
I agree about being an sni! I learned so much just from working as a nurse intern and it is true that they are always upping their requirements but not changing the curriculum. You now have to get an 80% on tests to pass the class and u can only retake a class once! I think this is a good idea to weed people out tho.

I agree with stoli and jmg21887. Stay away from Gateway Technical College. I am in there 3rd semester. Most teachers are horrible! They don't teach but read powerpoints, the ones that you can print at home and read for yourself. I pay for my classes and waste time at school just to come home to teach myself everything I need to know. They weed out students like crazy and boast high % on NCLEX pass. Arrogant, never give you a credit for proving them wrong-they are always right! They also have master's degree's and when write make unforgivable spelling mistakes. I know so many students who failed classes and have NO desire to continue nursing in that school, at least until the teachers get replaced. Teachers there need to be reeducated (nursing instructors). I have a class where you have to read 3 different books, + powerpoint and take lecture notes, you come to the test or exam and you know MOST of these questions are not from the material you read! That's why so many students fail. If you go to the dean as many did (a whole class did I was told by a friend), he would just listen to you and do NOTHING! That's how horrible nursing program at GTC is! Teachers protect each other, and blame students for working too much, having a big family, spending not enough time studying, etc for failures. There are several ridiculous rules/education strategies they employ not worth mentioning here. Some of them treat you as a kid or inferior to them just because they have master's degree and spell wrong, and don't explain the rationale behind abdominal cramping or nausea or why you should be checking for lung sounds (besides neuro) when infusing NCl 3% etc. They just don't know how to teach! It's a self-taught nursing program with high flunking rates and no support whatsoever! Some teachers lift you up and prod and push you forward and offer help without asking, and explain, and draw diagrams, boost your educational self-esteem level during class and praise you==that's how you get your strength and get encouraged to study harder and know more! At Gateway Technical College -- there is no such thing! Stay far away!

I am sorry to hear so much bad news from some of my classmates. I had 3 teachers who taught my class. Two were very good. I liked working in groups. I had to do all of my reading ahead of class time to understand it better. It is a lot of reading. But it was better than lectures. And I liked trying to think like a real nurse in class and not just in clincals. I will be in 4th semester and I think it will be just as hard as 3rd was. But I think I will be a good nurse when I graduate. I would tell you to go to Gateway if you want to be good.
