Kaplan review Med Book

Our class recently had a presentation by Kaplan to get people to sign up for their NCLEX_RN review class. What a sales job! Anyway, they gave everybody a Med Review book, saying that you need to know everything in that book to pass- and it's hundreds of meds. Most of which I've never seen on the floor, or don't recall from lectures. I'm a very good student, and don't know if this is a scare tactic to get us to use their review course, or if it's reality. But definitely a little freaked out. Can anyone who has seen this book and taken the NCLEX fairly recently speak to this?

I just took the NCLEX, and found out today that I passed :D.

I really liked Kaplan's strategies. However, I didn't memorize 100's of meds down pat. In fact, I didn't receive this book.

I memorized the CLASSES of meds. ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, psychotropics, etc. You'll never be able to remember each and every single med out there. But knowing the classes and the more popular ones used? That will help you tremendously.

I hope that post helps you. I just found out I passed the nclex...yay. I only used uworld, and there's no way I could've memorized all those meds. A representative of Kaplan went to my school and gave us the book as well. I never opened it for some reason. Make sure you study popular meds such as heparin, etc. Good luck

Pixierose and Oleacronon- thanks for the response- exactly what I needed to hear! Congrats to both of you!

You can endlessly study for pharmacology, there's a whole career on it. As a student nurse, you should be okay with what they are teaching you in class, the basics, you can iron out all of the small details as you go along. I made an app, it contains drug classes, drugs associated with the classes (generic and brand name), and all of the information school, clinicals, and the NCLEX required me to know such as MOA's, vitals, labs, common/severe side effects and nursing considerations to watch for. Check it out, its free, it's on the app stores or through our website nclexessentials.barcalabs.com. Good luck. I just passed my nclex this in August and this guide is all I studied to prep for pharm.

If it's the book you are referring to (blue cover, 300 most used meds on NCLEX book?), then I know which one you're talking about. I bought it myself and I oftentimes found the information contradicted what was in the Kaplan rationales, so it was frustrating. Don't be freaked out...I would just review meds that you come across and aren't familiar with...and I took the NCLEX yesterday... (waiting on results)

Good luck, fingers crossed for you!

When I took the NCLEX, I only had a few meds questions. They were very straight forward. If you know the "-olol" "-mycin" you will be fine.

Thanks, just walked out of a god-awful exam with so many obscure drugs...

I didn't leave the testing center with a good feeling either, but end up passing. I would say that's normal. Hopefully, you passed!!
