Hello all,
I am in a huge dillema. I just started a new job in a hospital working 7p-7a.My husband and I thought it would work out before starting so I took the position. here is the thing my husband also works nights. so we are just taking turns working he is on i am off i am on he is off. well he is now being transferred in his job to another position that will rotate alot of crazy shifts. We have three kids so this is not going to work for us. the problem is right now he is our primary income and I am getting my RN through excelsior so then I will have the bigger income. I have a strong desire to work inL&d when i finish. Here is my problem I do not know what to do about my current position because on my floor there is no dayshift for an Lpn and I think there is a rule about having to stay on a unit for so long before being able to transfer. So I am wondering what to do I dont want to ruin my reputation with the hospital because I will want to try to get into L&D there some day but in the meantime I have to do what is best for my family. What should I do I have only had one week of orientation but, the Job is not going to work for my situation.

What a tough situation, I feel for you. I would imagine you'll have to do your best to talk to your manager and/or HR at the hospital and explain that this is a totally unexpected turn of events. Life happens. I hope they're able to work with you for some solution. :caduceus:

Talk to your immediate supervisor and explain that your situation has changed dramatically and you need different shift. It's hard to get days sometimes, but since you are hired already, maybe they will try to make it work.
I feel awful every time I need to change something about my schedule, it's always such a big deal and they will try to make you feel quilty. Good luck.
I Plan to talk to them asap But, I also feel awful having to do this. I Know I have to do somethng it is just such a dread. I feel like I am going into the pricipals office. Thanks for the advice.

Talk to your manager/supervisor before putting in a notice. They did spend $ hiring you and may not want to let you go that easy. They might "find" a position on days for you, even if it is only part time. Positions somehow appear out of no where when an employee is going to leave. Sometimes not. But its worth a try.

Don't forget about the option of working for that facility PRN (if you can afford it) or agency nursing too...I had to do this for the same reason as you...hubby is a paramedic and his shifts change every three months and I need to be flexible (we have kids). Sadly no one would be flexible with me so I wound up doing agency...I love it!

I agree.....talk with your supervisor, let her know what has happened with your home schedule. Many times, they will be willing to work out something....it may end up not being the optimal position for you, but they may be able to work with you on the hours. They have invested time and money in orientation for you, and probably will be willing to work with you if there is anything at all available. Good luck. I know what a stress it is when you're a mom, trying to "fit" all the work away from home, plus kids. It's a tough time in your life, but you will get through it. I've been there and know how stressed you must be. I hope it all works out!

I agree about asking to change your status to PRN..this way, you're showing them that you value the job..while trying to negotiate what works best for you & your family.

I'm not sure why you feel so badly about it. Things changed. Things often do. Just think some peaceful thoughts, settle your heart and mind by focusing on a scene that you like - a meadow, a beach, whatever does it for you - and just say what you have to say. They will either be responsive or they will not. Unless this is the only place to ever work that's anywhere reasonably close to you, don't let it bowl you over. It's not your fault, not something on which you had advance notice. You have done nothing wrong and don't let anyone tell you you have.
I hope it works out well for you. Maybe you will let us know. When are you going to tell them?
Thanks everyone for your advice. Just an update I did talk to my supervisor today and they are going to allow me to go to day shift even though I am an LPN. Now I just have to hurry up and get My RN. anyway thanks again for all the advice.
