Just scheduled my first interview for lpn job on ortho floor.

I am really excited I just got a call from the local hospital asking to schedule an interview for the prn orthopedic floor lpn position (I go next monday). Can anyone give me any ideas about what to expect during the interview? Is there anything I should review before the interview? I have a general idea of what the ortho floor will be like but all my clinicals were on med-surg, how different is it going to be? Any wisdom will be appreciated.:yeah::eek::yeah::eek:

Go to sites like monster.com, salary.com, & newgradlife.blogspot.com/ for some tips on the usual interviewing questions you may encounter.

They want to know that you have the basic competencies they need, that you are trainable, and that you'll fit into their unit.

Just remember, it's all about what you can do for them.

There is a lot of moving/turning of patients...most floors have patient lifts, but turning is not done by rotisserie as far as I know :D. You will still need basic med-surg every day, even if the patient is classified as 'only' ortho, simply because of the mobility changes. Also very important to remember circulation checks to the affected extremity. Pain control is a big issue. Positioning of the affected part is also huge. (and different docs like different things). You'll get the hang of it :) I hope you get the job :) I worked on a mixed surgical floor w/a heavy ortho load- and I really liked it. :D

They may ask you about DVT's, PEs, and s/s infection or dressing changes. I've noticed that pain control is HUGE with these patients. And these patients often take Lovenox or Heparin, etc. Just some ideas of topics to brush-up on before your interview so you can feel confident about whatever comes your way. Good luck:yeah:

Also keep in mind early ambulation for these patients. You will be required to form working relationships with physical therapy.

Be prepared to answer behavioral questions on those topics as well.

To add to the others, coumadin, weight bearing status, gait belts, walkers, crutches, teds/SCDs, CMS, pulses and above all, pain control.

Hello, I just wanted to know how your interview went because I am very interested in this area of nursing. What does the LPN do on the unit if you do not mind me asking?

Unfortunately I did not get the position. It sounded really cool. The nurse who interviewed me said that they do team nursing. There is one RN, one LPN and One CNA in charge of 7 patients on the day shift and 10 patients on the night shift. The team is in charge of the total care of the patient. I did interview the next week for an office job as an lpn for a surgery practice and I got that job. I start on the 30th. Good luck finding the job you really want.:)
