Just let go from job and can't focus on boards!

Published

Hi everyone,

I am so depressed and devastated. I just was let go from my current job as a RN and I am suppose to preparing for boards. :crying2: Now I have to go and find something to pay bills in the mean while so I don't sink. There are hardly any jobs here in Florida and it may take a few months just to find work. I will probably be an ARNP by then!! I just can't seem to focus on studying as this is a shock for me and on top of that my son has an Autism spectrum disorder and needs therapy that my income used to cover. I feel like pulling out my hair but I don't have that much to spare. What do I do?

Do you qualify for unemployment?

What about Cobra? I realize it is expensive but if you need medical insurance for your child..

Also.. I realize there are 'no' jobs in FL for RNs, but I am sure you can get into an agency, home health or LTC situation faster than you can get back into acute care. Especially if you have experience.

Good luck with the job search and preparing for the boards.

I would find another job, get settled and wait before taking boards. I don't know what kind of test taker you are but undergoing a lot of stress makes it very hard to test well. I am a really strong test taker but after my daughter's open heart surgery last year, I felt like I couldn't think straight. Even reading on the PNCB website, they stress that undergoing a lot of personal challenges has been shown to have a negative effect on the ability to pass.

I'm sorry to hear you're going through all this. I hope you find a great job quickly.

Thanks you guys for the words of encouragement. My boss called me in to speak to her on Monday about the events that led up to me being let go. First of all there were no investigations done and it was just word of mouth and the other nurse that was involved was only written up and not terminated. This happened a week ago and now you call me after the other nurses complained that I was let go of unfairly! I just don't get it in Florida! Nursing is very cut throat down here and we eat each other alive!:argue: This is an "fire at will" state so you can be let go just because. Im in my last semester of FNP school and I just completed my last clinical but my heart is still very heavy. I love being a nurse but walk on eggshells with my co-workers. Its very hard when they know you are going back to school and they are not. The thing that bugs me out is when they say that they do not need to go back to school to become an advanced practice nurse because they are making so much more money on the floor than APNs do. :uhoh3: UNBELIEVABLE! And we call ourselves nurses?! I will post back to let you all know what happens on Monday.

Just remember... your going to pass your boards soon and not have to worry about this ever again. That being said, if it's a wrongful termination you have action if you choose to persue it.

Mama, so why are you upset that they let you go? It's quite obvious they didn't want you to succeed in the first place. They are JEALOUS of you! Of course they are going to let you go when you are close to being finished. They are threatened by you. I don't know how strong your faith is, but God has bigger and better plans for you! Don't you know that you will find a much better job with great benefits and better hours allowing you to take care of your son. Imagine not being as stressed out! Hold your head up. Use this as motivation to kill the boards. Mama, it would only give them pleasure to hear that you didn't make it. So prove them wrong. Stop dwelling on the past. It has no useful purpose. Yes, you are shocked! They fired you. You know they didn't want you to succeed anyway. They are missing the point. It's NOT about the money. Get back the horse. Do this for your son. So he can be proud of you. Don't let a small set back get in your way. You have worked too hard to come this far! (I know it wasn't easy for you!). We are proud of you. Trust and believe that it will work out for you. Congrats when you kill it on the exam. You will find something. Don't you DARE waste another single tear on this. Move on. Get crackin and start studying.

God Bless!!!

P.S. When you pass, Please let us know! Ok?

Thank you guys for the words of encouragment!!

I was called back in and offered my position back! My boss told me that the medical director made a big deal about me being terminated and my co-workers had also spoken up for me! I am shocked to find this out but also relieved that I have my job still but I am nervous that I will be set up for another big problem. I just need to bust the AANP exam wide open and WOW my future employers at my interviews because this is starting to get crucial now! I now wonder if they tried to get rid of me on purpose and WE are suppose to be the nuturing type for we are nurses right?! I will keep you all posted about my boards and the journey to freedom from the bedside! Chat with you soon!:thankya:
