Just Got Hired Tonite!!!!

Ok so I admit I had an agenda when I went in to my nurse manager's office to interview her for a school project. I had 12 questions I asked her ranging from "what is the biggest threat to nursing today?" to "what are you strengths and weaknesses?" to "what has been your greatest challenge this year?" Etc....

I had been working on her floor medsurg/onc since May as an extern and really enjoyed working with her and the other staff. After my interview with her in which I found her well suited to NM, I mentioned that I would like to work on this floor after I graduate in May. She explained to me what was available, I picked nightshift and she told me to contact HR on monday to get the process rolling...How's that for a backwards interview?!!!

Sometimes you just gotta ask............Too Happy for Words Right Now!!!

She passed my interview and I guess I in turn passed hers!!!!

I recommend this strategy...Hope I get an "A" on my paper!!!

Congratulations!

Just curious as to what made you choose to go into med-surg/ONC. I am trying to make up my mind where I fit best.

Thanks.

I picked MedSurg/Onc over SPU or medsurg or tele or ccu or er or ortho or etc because I value the kind of relationship I can have with someone who has Cancer. I find people who have Cancer to be some of the most courageous and dignified of many who have life threatening illnesses. I tend to gravitate towards difficult situations which ultimately challenge me and stretch me beyond my limits. I tend to overlook many of the transformations CA pts go thru. I think I want to help these people anyway I can knowing that their struggle is no fault of their own. I have struggled with my own illnesses and want to give back what I have learned in order to help them along and live life to the limit. On some floors it hard to give that personal touch esp. on SPU when the average stay is 24-36 hours. I like being with pts for the long haul however long that may be....

Everyone has their niche- hope you find yours.....Heather
