Just got accepted to RN school, now it's an issue with work.

I'm an LPN working nights, full time in an ICU. I just got accepted to a RN program that starts in the fall. My biggest concern is working full time while in school full time. I've discussed going PT with my supervisor, with plenty of advance notice, and all I get is "I'll look into it." I would like to get this figured out soon because our schedules are made a month and a half in advance. I don't want to lose my position in the ICU because that's where I want to end up after graduating. Do I go above her to the DON or just start looking for something else that will let me go part time?

I would start looking for something else because it seems she is being passive aggressive in letting you know that she does not want to accommodate you. I had an employer renege on their promise to work with me concerning school because the person who made the promise left and her replacement played favoritism with another nurse. You do not want to wait to the last minute to find out that she just can't do anything for you, and you know, that is how this will turn out. You can bet on it.

Thanks Cali, if I don't hear from her by the end of the week, I'll go up to DON. But I won't keep all my proverbial eggs in one basket. I'm going to start looking tomorrow.

I know that where you want to stay in ICU, but look for other part time or weekend positions. I hate working every weekend but I know that in a year I will have my RN degree.
