Well, I just applied to Pima Community College Nursing and Im waiting for my paper application and what semester I will be admitted to! I just have a very general question: What should I expect? I know that there is a loooooong waiting list, but just wondering if anyone who is in the program or has gone through it can give me a heads up on what to expect? I only have 2 classes left that I can take before the program starts (Mircrobiology and FSN) which I plan on doing ASAP. Im so exicted to get in, Pima dosent seem to give much information on what I should do in the meantime (study related). Any info will be MUCH appreciated!

Do you have your cultural requirement done yet? Congrats on getting your prereqs done. I can't wait until I apply. If I were you, I would take as much spanish as I could once everything else is taken care of. The language will be a huge benefit for getting a job and being useful with non english speakers. If you are already fluent, take the Yaqui and Tohono language classes. That would be icing on the cake.

Go to the bookstore and pick up the drug calculation book and look it over. However, the wait is usually 2 years so you may have a long time.
Another thing that is very wise is trying to find yourself some healthcare experience. Look to volunteer someplace, become a unit clerk or PCT someplace. Some nursing homes will even train you to become a CNA (with a comittment).
If you ever plan to get your BSN, then you can also take stats or pathophysiology while you wait and other pre-reqs. Look at what ASU/NAU or other places require and you can get that done...for me, I had 5 more classes at the CC level to take for my BSN prereqs (and a slew of others at the university level.)
When do you plan on applying to the Nursing program? I havent taken any Spanish yet, and since Im having problems with getting financial aide I will probably learn it on my own. I was thinking about trying Rosetta Stone program. Have you ever used it?
Sounds like a great idea to try and get some experience beforehand, I'll have to look into that, as well as getting some books from the bookstore. I was thinking of doing an RN to BSN program with Jacksonville University online, have you heard of this program? Thanks for all the great info!
Yep, I know a few nurses taking that route. They seem to like it.
It requires stats for sure. Take the stats that's a psy (I think it's psy 230 or 240?)

I have heard that if you are employed at least part time at one of the local hospitals in a non-nursing capacity that you are moved up the waiting list at Pima CC. I mean 2 years is really a long time to wait. If you don't study anything new at least re-read your A & P book frequently. Why don't you pick up a NCLEX book and start with that? I still have 2 more pre-reqs . Good luck to you and please let me know when you receive your acceptance letter so I know how long the wait really is....

Who did you hear that from? I have never heard that from anybody working at Pima...

mountain view care center will train/pay you to be a CNA for 7.50/hr, 8.50 once the 3-4week class is done and 9.50 once your certified, all without a commitment....I have worked there over a year and the weekend Baylor shifts pay you about 11.15 if you figure in the bonus hours (get paid for 37.5 hours for working 32)...plus its great for school and experience....you definitely become less shy about barging into people's rooms and asking them personal questions or doing stuff to them that may be less than comfortable for both of you...all of which you will do as a nurse....but with less poo ....I called most of the LTC places in tucson that the AZBN have certified to teach and this was the only one who didn't require a 6mo-1 year commitment and also paid you to train
Well Cardiac, I have 2 close friends that applied to the PCC program 4 &1/2 weeks apart. The one who applied later who happens to work in the cath lab at UMC got accepted into the program 2 full semesters before the girl who applied first as she is a SAHM. I think the hospitals "hold" spots with in the PCC program as a part of their promise to pay the tution in return for a work committment. I can't think of any other reason this could have happened. When w bring it up to others in NS several people have noticed that trend. Now of course PCC will not admit to this so it really is all speculation but actions do speak louder than words. I just can't believe that everyone tells you not to work during NS because of the course load, the instructors encourage you not to work but the people that do work get into NS earlier than someone who doesn't work.....
