Hi All,
Figured I'd start a thread for applicants to the Johns Hopkins Masters Entry into Nursing Practice for entry in spring 2017 with July 1 deadline. Good luck all.
Hello, congratulations @ Ambition20 and @CaitlynG!
You will have super happy weekend! :-)
Btw, could you please share your acceptance process? I am really eager to hear from you. I applied earlier but did hear yet...so nervous..
And unfinished prerequisites might be a reason for waiting? My friends and I are still need to take two or more pre reqs. It would be helpful if you can share some ideas.
Hey @sonagi87! I dont know how they give out decisions, but i got my acceptance on 2/23, whereas someone I knew got hers the day after. They first sent an email to tell me I got accepted, and an hour later informed me that I got a scholarship. I don't think prereqs an issue unless they requested for them? They called me in January to ask for some prereqs which I didnt do very well (LONGGG time ago), but I told them I took them again, which I then reconfirmed to them.
I was at UPenn this weekend and I loved it - the city, the program, the research opportunities.
But I am tempted to just go for JHU for the financial aspects of it
any suggestions? recommendations? I know JHU only gets you an MSN, but not an NP (unless you proceed with the DNP); whereas UPENN gets you an NP..
Yay! Congratulations @katty_tseng! It's amazing that you were accepted (JHU & UPenn)! You must have really high scores and powerful resume / essays.
Thank you for your kind reply and sharing your opinions regarding prereqs. So I guess admission teams sent emails earlier than they notified (early march) :-)
I believe you will do well at both of the school and hope you can make a good decision!
katty_tseng I am in a similar predicament. To be honest, I love UPenn and it's my top choice. My end goal is to be an NP anyway. I really hope they come through with the financial aid next week. But Penn doesn't sound like they give a lot of scholarship money. For the Penn Grant, I'm not sure how much people typically get.
I got a $25k scholarship from Hopkins for the five semesters, but I think I screwed up on my FAFSA (putting it in as a fifth year Bachelors with all of my other programs instead of a Masters program) based on an email I received yesterday. So right not I'm not sure if I'm getting any more money from them. I'll probably call.
As for DNP vs NP, I have been looking at job descriptions where I live and I haven't seen any jobs say they prefer DNPs over Masters prepared NPs. Of course, things may change in the next few years.
@breadnroses, I totally agree with you that Upenn should offer more money lol. For me, cuz of my citizenship status, I'm not eligible for federal grants or aids so for me,any sort of financial help is a plus. Are you leaning towards jhu or upenn?
Upenn was such a lovely city :'(
Are u gonna be at the jhu students day on 31st?
@sonagi87: good luck to you too!!to be honest,my scores were not great. I'm not sure if my resume stood out but I wouldn't worry so much about the scores.
Ah, that stinks about not getting federal aid! I hope you get the most scholarship help from your top choice. I am leaning towards Penn right now, so I'm not sure if I'm going to accepted students day at JHU yet since Penn's deposit deadline is [unfortunately] before JHU's acceptance students day. I have actually visited JHU Nursing before and I loved it! Actually, last summer I wanted to apply to start there in Spring 2017, but that didn't work out. So I just ending up applying to JHU and other schools to start in the Summer/Fall 2017.
@breadnroses,
I think I'm just gonna deposit for penn and check out jhu before I make a last decision.its a lot of money for both, and it is a pretty long commitment lol and I don't wanna make a mistake
Do u mind sharing why you loved jhu?the culture?the professors?the environment? Thanks!!!
Sure. I visited JHSON a year ago; it was actually the first nursing school I visited. I liked how they were not arrogant despite being the #1 nursing school in the country, and how many people there loved being nurses. They weren't just proud of their school, but proud to be a nurse. This meant a lot to me because I've had many reservations about going into nursing. A professor I encountered on a tour seemed nice. She assured us that they'd take care of us during clinical and that we should not be afraid. The students on the panel seemed serious about their education as well.
They have a nice building. It wasn't as large as I thought it would be, but I'm not sure if I saw the whole building. The tour I went on was really short, to be honest.
It's good you're visiting before making a decision! I hope it brings you more clarity.
I'm not sure if there's a FB group as my facebook is currently actually deactivated, but I'm sure one will pop up as more people are accepted.

got admitted as well! I got a call for a scholarship but couldn't pick up so I'm waiting on a call back. By the way, does anyone know how long the program is and if they are going to have an admitted students day?
also, I submitted my application January 1st, but had my letters of rec in before then. My application was marked complete upon arrival of my last transcript on feb 9th.
excited to meet you all!
