Johns Hopkins Hospital Nurse Residency Program 2020

Published

Hi,

I have applied for and received an invite to interview at JHH on a pediatric unit. I figured since there are previous threads for past years I'd start a new one for 2020 hires/start dates! Lets all keep each other informed and updated through the process.

@thearizonanurse That is so crazy. I think it definitely depends on if your state has an active stay at home order or not. I personally will go wherever I can to take the test, even if I have to travel to California. Hopefully this fiasco will be over in the future. I’ve been to Baltimore several times since I’ve lived in Philly the last 8 years. It’s an amazing city with the best crab cakes ever! There are so many neighborhoods. It’s very similar to Philadelphia.

It is! But luckily I live in a city that's 2-3hrs driving from Phx or San Diego so I'm optimistic once I get to look at dates. Can't wait for that food man and finally some green land and no desert hahaha

@thearizonanurse you won’t be disappointed. I am so excited about the interview. What should I expect? Any words of advice? Also, Baltimore is such a great location. You can go to DC, Philly, the Delaware and Jersey shores, NYC, and Boston all by quick trips! You’ll love it. I’m excited, I love Philadelphia but I can’t pass up this opportunity. ?

You're so right, coming down from Jersey its only 3 hours and even faster by train, really no time at all. I'm also very excited to explore a new city glad to hear you've had good experiences. For the interview honestly just be yourself, alot of my questions were based on clinical experiences "how did you handle a time when you messed up" "strengths and weaknesses" like that. I really feel they want to see what kind of person you are. My grades were great but I have no prior work experience (tech, CNA, PCA etc. just clinicals). Just try to be confident and show them why you want to work at a place like hopkins and why you fit the bill. Best of luck! Rooting for you!

Sweet! Can't wait!

So some tangible advice I can give (unlike most people who just share abstract and vague advice) is be prepared for behavior questions and not so much clinical scenarios. But of course it helps to know about the common cases on the floor and potential things you'd see (you can discuss your experience with the floors patient population if you have some). They'd be pleased to know you're comfortable and familiar with the pt. pop.

As far as behavior questions, be able to answer: Tell me about yourself, Why JHH (it's good to include the mission and what it means to you), A time you went above and beyond for a pt, A time a pt. was difficult and how you dealt with it, Describe being a part of a team, Advice you've been given, and At least 2 strengths and weaknesses.

And with all behavior questions, end with stating what the value is from that learning experience. So basically the formula is 'Experience' (which answers the question) + 'Value gained' = good answer.

This is pretty much the meat of all new grad interviews so if you know that then you're set. I reheorificed all my answers for pretty much 99% of potential behavior questions and the interview went smoothly.

Other tips are to have good lighting in your room for the video and angle the camera paralleled to your profile, not at an angle lower or higher.

With all that said, best of luck! Look forward to meeting you in MD

My biggest piece of advice is like everyone said above, be prepared for "tell me about a time when"... questions, but also just smile a lot and be super bubbly! My manager and I talked about animals for the first few minutes LOL and she remembered that when she called me the next day and said "I hope you and your cat are prepared for a move across the country!" LOL so I think your personality is huge just showing you are a person that is friendly and pleasant and who they would want to be around and work with. ? I hope that helps!!

@nurselife2020 and @thearizonanurse thank you guys so much for the very detailed and valuable information you have provided me! @nurselife2020I work in South Jersey in Cherry Hill in the ICU! I really appreciate the candor and direct advice. You guys will make fantastic nurses. I take my boards in Late August hopefully, which is really right around the corner! I look forward to meeting you guys in Maryland too. I hope it works out. ?

@ERLeff sorry forgot to mention your valuable help too! Thanks so much. Where in Jersey do you live? I work at Jefferson in Cherry Hill right across the bridge from Philly!

All good. I'm way up north in Bergen county. Needless to say you know how the pandemic is looking up here LOL. Glad to see someone close to the dirty jerz, and kudos to you for getting that ICU experience. My biggest single regret from undergrad is not getting out and getting that experience. I am sure it will do you well in your interview and on the floor.

@ERLeff thanks! I appreciate it. It sure has been rough though working in a COVID ICU. I’m exhausted. Glad you are moving down. Thanks for the kudos. Hopkins will be lucky to have you!

my mom is from jersey and we have made a few trips to the jersey shore and I LOVE it. I also fell in love with DC, so I am extremely happy with the location. if anyone wants to stay in contact and add me on insta its @danalohmann

@nurselife2020 I hope my manager interviewer asks me about cats. I have two and love them! I’m gonna have to give them both a kitty Xanax to help with the move haha

Also, If I understood correctly, there are multiple start dates? Like You can choose which date to start?

How long did it take you to hear back after your interview? I’m so very excited. There’s also a separate meeting for discussion about benefits, salary, etc.. I wonder if Hopkins offers any form of relocation assistance. I’m so very excited and grateful for the opportunity and hope that everyone else does well!

Hi! I heard back same day. Literally less than 1 hour after with an offer, then I heard back from other interviews the next week with their offers. There is a same day mini-orientation/presentation about benefits and salary, etc. (I remember because everyone in the meeting was very relaxed about the presentation until it was the salary slide and almost everyone brought out a pen and paper to write it down?).

JHH does not offer relocation assistance, atleast they did not talk about it... I probably should have asked cos it is costing me SO MUCH money to move across states, but I am happy to move! I love JH!
