Jobs while in school??

Published

Hi! I am new to this forum and was wondering what kind of job everyone has while in school?

I am currently awaiting my acceptence letter for a Spring 08 entry into Nursing school and I am freaking out about working full time while trying to do Nursing school. I dont want to mess this up since it has taken me so long to get to this point! I'm not sure if i should continue working, try cutting my hours, or take out a bunch of student loans and not work at all if possible. What does everyone else do? does anyone else struggles with this issue?

I really cannot afford not to work. how do people do this?

I am working as a hostess at a restaurant at the moment, next month I'll be taking CNA classes...then I can quit my hostess job. I plan to be a CNA while in NS. Luckily I have free tuition. I still gotta pay for supplies and other bills though. Er.

How'd you manage free tuition?

Hi Silicone, When your parents are in the navy or military and have retired, their children's education are taken care of. I just so happen to get lucky. It's called "Cal-Vet" In which it only works if you stay in California. At the age of 23 you lose all military benefits (such as medical benefits) except for cal-vet...in which they'll keep paying until I finish school. I'm grateful for it. I don't know how I'd pull through. I just have to be a full time student and make poverty level income (has to be less than $10,000.00).

But I've got bills to pay, so I'm not that lucky also...I pulled out student loans early in my college days to pay for books, supplies, gas, dorming and housing (dorms can be very pricey!) Cal vet only pays for tuition.

=)

I suggest look for Motel front desk job...where my brother and I are working currently. It is really easy job plus u get time to study overthere too...I work on weekends and my brother works all nights a week.

Jalpa!

I am glad someone has decided to discuss this topic!!!!

I am working full time for the City as a Supervising Clerk, I work 5 days a week and work every weekend to be able to attend classes on Tuesday and Thursday. I really want to become a Registered Nurse and I thought I was clear on my options to get there. I was going to work on my pre-reqs at my community college and graduate with a associates degree, then transfer over to a university as a junior and begin the nursing program and graduate with a bachelor's degree. However, now that I have begun taking the harder nursing classes, (Right now, I'm taking Microbiology and Human Anatomy & Physiology II) I hear students saying I should take the LPN program first. I don't know what to do because I want to become a really good nurse and most say if you startout as a RN you won't have a lot of experience and to just get it out of your head if you need to ask a LPN or RN for help because they won't help you...I'm so confused?!

I also think if I can become a LPN first, I can make my own hours. Where I work now the hours are already set..mandatory 5 day workweek with 2 days off. Which is hard when you have to study and also have family obligations..

Any help for a struggling student?:o

Hey there everyone,

I also work full time and have a husband and 2 children(so in all reality I have 3 kids!!!). I am going to be going to orientation on Friday for the nursing program for our local comm college, and am hoping that I will be able to apply to the program by spring or fall of next year. I still have a few pre reqs to get out of the way. My friend applied for the same comm college and got a living expense loan(I guess part of the student loan package?) for 16,000 for bills and such while she's in school. I am hoping just to be able to get loans to pay for me, I think myself and hubby make too much money for grants, and too many bills to pay cash for the courses.....I hate never having enough money, it really sucks, but after I become a nurse, that hopefully won't be too much of a problem!! Glad to see this topic come up,,have a wonderful day!

Im 19 and work at Starbucks (cant wait to get out of there!)... I am waiting to get accepted and hopefully will begin the program in sept 08. I have no intentions to keep working, I am going to save up as much as I can now.. I would much rather be broke and completely focused on nursing, than being overly stressed. Nursing will give me enough stress as it is lol. Obviously, though, I am only 19 and dont have other obligations like a family and such. I have so much respect for those moms who manage to get themselves through nursing school, it must be tough and i dont think i could do it.

My school offers work-study for those who need some extra money. It's nice because I work for a Biology professor and he has given me tons of advice about the different health professions. His students end up being successful nurses, PAs, OTs, PTs, physicians, and so forth. And if I run out of things to do for him, he has me study. (It's a great way to keep myself in line when it comes to my grades!) ;)

Specializes in none.

...My program is very insistent that we not attempt to work; it was a question on our application, required to be addressed in our essay, and the subject of an interview question. It's an accelerated DEMSN program and they've told us to budget at least 70 hours per week to school...

IS 70 hours per week a reality? Are you finding it to be more or less than that? I'm just curious to know.

Thanks!

I had a homecare job just one day a week 12 hours where I could study but it was so boring I quit. Got a CNA job and working my butt off but I was learning too. :) Got EMT training and saw they have it pretty good. With no calls you get to sit around and play video games, watch tv, or do homework and get paid for it! :D Highly recommend this option if ER is your interest.

If not, don't get full time employment unless you are used to hard work and can do homework too. I couldn't handle that so I'm per diem at my job. I knew students that had to drop out of nursing school because their full time job took everything out of them. Others slept in class because they worked all nite but they got thru school and graduated.

Specializes in NICU level III.

When I was going to nursing school I worked part-time as a nurse tech in the hospital. My school believed that school was #1 & everything else in your life such as: friends, family, work, even those that had children, etc. should be #2. Nazi's I know! Anyways, I worked part-time & got loans for what I couldn't afford. Seems harsh but really when you graduate you'll be making decent money & will be able to pay off the student loans in no time. :)

Goodluck! :dncg:

Well I am working F/T, I have to because I am a single mom and I have bills to pay and a daughter to take care of.:redpinkhe I work about 37.5 hours a week and I am still taking my pre-req's, but I have night classes. It's a slower process-:o but I am determined to get there. If I could choose not to work while I take classes I would- but I have no choice. This is the way I have to do it- other people have done it, and I know if they can do it I CAN do it too!;) no doubt about it. I wouldn't personally take out a loan- just the interest and having to pay it back and all freaks me out:uhoh3:- but I have other bills that I am in debt for- so every situation is different- whatever you decide though good luck!:D
