Jobs for prenursing students.

Published

Hello,

I was hoping that someone could tell me what the best job for a prenursing student is. I have heard of obtaining Certified Nurses Assistant training but was told that it was not worth the time. I have worked in retail for almost two straight years now and the only experience I have in the medical field is a few months of volunteer work at a local hospital. I wont begin my nursing program until January 09; so during the time that I am not taking classes I would really like to gain some experience. Does anyone have advice?

Specializes in Travel Nursing, ICU, tele, etc.

I can't imagine that getting your CNA would not be worth the time. What I did before I was a nurse and while I was in nursing school, is I worked in a group home and that was great experience. We were certified in medication administration, trained in CPR and first aid etc. Also, since I worked nights, I had a lot of time to study at work. It actually was an ideal situation.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Some good entry level jobs for pre-nursing students are listed below, as all of these positions are attainable with only a few weeks to a few months of training.

1. CNA

2. Medication aide

3. Dietary aide

4. Phlebotomy technician

5. Patient care technician

6. Home health aide

Specializes in Acute Hemodialysis, Cardiac, ICU, OR.

As a nursing student, I worked as a Unit Secretary and then as an EKG tech. Being a Unit Secretary allows you to get a feel for how a hospital unit works, the charting, data entry, interpersonal experiences, etc. Working as an EKG Tech allowed me to see ALL of the hospital units, meet many people, and get a jump on learning to read EKG rhythms. Also, the hours were great for me: I went to work before school (4:30 - 7:00 am) and every other weekend. I was able to have my afternoons and evenings off for study and family.

I think that being a CNA is a great place to start. You get a great feel and the basics of nursing from this job.

It is a start and can really prepare you for what to expect in your career. GOOD LUCK

I am a pre-nursing student (currently doing pre-req's). I just applied for a job in the ER of a hospital as a Patient Representative. It is patient relations, and acting as the liasion between doctors, nurses, family, etc. and keeping the pt informed while they wait. During the interview, the manager told me that I would be able to observe any procedures that I wanted to!

I'm excited (and really want the job). (oh, yeah..... and I'm hoping to build a solid rep with the hospital for internships, and future :nurse: opportunities.)
