jobs in houston?

Published

i have recently signed on with OGP and am now being placed.

it's the desire of my heart to be in houston, REALLY! but when i mentioned texas to my recuriter she sounded like there's no jobs there. she's trying to place me in OK, which i do not desire because i've been away from the ocean for too long and if i don't return soon i may dry up :D

does anyone have any idea if there are hospitals hiring through o'grady peyton?

Specializes in trauma ICU,TNCC, NRP, PALS, ACLS.

It could be b/e a lot people from hurricane Katrina relocated to Houston, and were hired to work in the health care field.

it could also be that ogp has quotas to fill and it's better for them to put you in ok. can you say houston or no deal?

i would like to say houston or no deal, but the contract said they hold the final say. they'll just try to work with me.

i knew that before i signed the contract.

i just hope it's not somewhere too scary

best of luck! i hope you get your first choice, and if not, at least someplace you'll like.

Nursing recruiters put you where THEY want you to go.

If that just happens to match your career goals, then it works out well.

I learned that the hard way.

There could be plenty of openings in Houston, but they may stand to gain more or might be getting pressure to place you in OK for one reason or another. They may already have enough people wanting to go to Houston (quota wise) and may have a greater need in OK.

But that's certainly no reason to send you to OK when you want to be in Houston, so you need to advocate for yourself and keep in mind that many recruiters are occasionally misleading at best and flat out liars at worst for their own personal gain.

I'd also like to add that I've been reading post after post about Houston not having any jobs because we've absorbed so many Katrina nurses.

My hospital is 50 miles out of downtown Houston so the medical center may be different, but I really doubt it.

My hospital has employed many Katrina evacuees but we are hardly short on nursing job openings.

I counted 12 full time openings today in our ER that are open to new grads alone, so that doesn't even include the ER openings reserved for experienced people.

There are also openings right now in SICU, MICU, L&D, med/surg, NICU, PICU, radiology, oncology, the list goes on.

So I'm not understanding where all of this "no jobs in Houston" stuff is coming from because the Katrina evacuees have hardly made a dent in our shortage despite the number of them that have been hired here.

Again, I'm speaking only for my hospital but I'm just not seeing how it would be much different in Houston proper.

Start looking at Houston area hospital websites and see how many openings are posted.

I think that you'll find that your recruiter is full of it and I'll bet if I asked around, I'd probably find some OGP travelers working here right now.

i wondered about all the shortage talk too. if the sunday chronicle employment section is any indicator, then it seems like EVERYONE is hiring right now! and that's just the ones who felt the need was great enough to advertise.

Why don't you look at another recruiting agency. If the one you have doesn't work, then leave them.

I came to Houston as a traveller. The agency I worked with was great (maybe because they were located in Houston). Anyway, I loved Houston so much I decided to stay.

I can give you the referral if you would like. Just email me at my yahoo address: greateravon.

All the best,
