Jobs avaliable in Houston

Published

Am considering relocation to Houston area from PA. I currently work tele new grad, AD/RN, 6 months ago I have ACLS certification. Hearing so many grim things about unemployment levels. Are there jobs to be had for RN's as easily in the past or are we better off staying put until things turn around? DH has a CDL and would be looking for work as well. Just looking an updated view of the current economic situation. Would also need a good area to rent a house that has safe area for kids 20-30 minute drive to a hospital and would allow my 2 small dogs.

COME ON DOWN!!! Hospitals in Houston are still hiring but I doubt whether you'll be able to wangle any relocation $. We have seveal new hospitals opening up in the metro area, so the job situation here remains pretty good. I am sure that your DH won't have any problems with jobbage either - have you taken a look at the Houston Chronical job section? http://www.chron.com/class/jobs/ .

I would advise you not to decide on a permanent place to live until you line up a job - otherwise you may end up with some serious commuting time. Houston is unique in that it isn't arranged like a traditional city - central business district surrounded by decreasingly dense suburbs. We don't have any zoning (never have, never will), so growth is 'organic' rather than carefully restricted. We have a bunch of different "districts", each with it's own character. Result? We have nice livable areas and low cost housing all over the place.

Have you had a chance to visit Houston? If not, give us a try. Don't be put off by the traffic - it's only scary if you are unfamiliar with the road. You'll get used to it in no time and be just like us natives. Hey, know why no one ever reports dangerous high-speed car chases in Houston??? No one notices, we all drive that way.. . :lol2:

Thanks for the reply! How are working conditions? I am on a floor that has a 4:1 ratio ,5:1 on nights, an aide for 20 patients and a secretary except for nights. We are union here in PA I know the southern areas are strongly non-union I am not sure if that makes much of a difference in working conditions? I saw the website with the jobs posted and there does seem to be alot out there, but you know the view from the outside and the inside can be two different ones! I have also seen quite a few very nice homes for rent in the $800 range on HAR.com (that would probably be out top comfort range for rent), is that a legitimite site for the most part? I don't want to get a false picture from the internet! Then get to hte aea to start looking at places and they are not at all what they seemed to be. I have not been to Houston but my oder brother has been there for 30 years so I have a resource on the ground! DH and I are up for an adventure to just move and have a positive attitude about change in that regard. Are there areas that are to be avoided in particular when searching for areas to rent? Hospitals to avoid that sort of insider info is what I would love to hear. Thank you

What part of town are the houses in that you are looking at? $800 seems kinda low for a house. I own in a mid-price area and the houses in my neighborhood rent for around $1100 and up.

There are jobs to be had in houston, we have been less impacted by the economy than other areas of the country.

Some of the areas that were in the $800 range were Lincoln Heights,South Crest 4,Chimney Hill, Missouri City,Pasadena, Northline Terrace Sec 2,Glen Iris 3, Wildheather 1,Wood Glen 1. I don't know if tehse are good areas or not or if they are in reasonable distance of hospitals? I don't want to have any misconceptions of what I would be expecting.

Wow, those are all over Houston. From Missouri City to Pasadena could easily be over an hour drive. I wouldn't rent any of those without seeing them first. They are mostly in neighboorhoods/subdivisions that have nice sections and rougher sections.
