I am 10 weeks out from graduating. When is an appropriate time to start applying for jobs and getting my name out there? I live in a small community with the college I am graduating from right next to the hospital. But I do not want to be pushy or presumptuous that i am going to pass my boards on the first try. I just want to plan ahead and prepare.

Apply when you have your license, unless you know for certain the these hospitals are willing to hire people pre-licensure. But even then I wouldn't be HR is kind of brutal and most of the time they just kick those sorts of application to the curb!

I started applying for jobs about six weeks before I graduated (and I was hired and started my job about a month before I wrote my exam).

Where I live you can work as a "Graduate Nurse" in between the time you graduate and the time you pass your boards. We get temporary licences to do so.

I would encourage you to start applying early regardless though- especially if a job that you're super interested in is posted. The worst they can say is they're not interested until you have your licence, right?!

Congrats and good luck on your last few weeks!

PS - kind of off topic- but I had a person at my university look over my resume to give me tips before I started applying for jobs and it was incredibly helpful!

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

I started applying in Feb, and graduated in May. However, I didn't really have any interviews until I was very close to graduation, and nothing in a hospital (though I had an offer that later had to be rescinded from the hospital where I did clinicals and preceptorship). I would try calling the hospital's HR department, and ask them if they accept people who are finishing up their program, and want to be proactive. They may tell you to wait until you're licensed, let you work with your IP, or may consider you prior to all of that.

I applied February to March before I graduated. Just be sure to click yes you have your license so that the computer doesn't automatically weed you out. Plan to have your license in hand prior to your start date. Interim permit doesn't really mean anything anymore, at least not in ca.

Thanks guys, alot of great info to help get me started.
