job options for summer

Published

So I am starting my 2nd year as a school nurse. I have one year of LTC nursing and one year of being a shot nurse for a clinic. Are there any suggestions for working during the summer with no experience in other areas that would be prn? I do not want to go back to LTC but would like to work at a hospital yet I don't have any hospital experience.

Have you thought about working at a Summer camp? Either a day camp or residential camp. I worked for three Summers as a camp nurse at a day camp and it was great. Very similar to school nursing but more fun b/c you get to be outside ;)

I second the summer camp nursing comment. It's like urgent care. Some camps will fly you out and obtain the temporary license for you, and you'll get a stipend and 12-hour days of alternating between some of the hardest work ever and the sheer enjoyment of camp.

Phone triage? My sister just started her first job as an RN and she is doing phone triage with a clinic. She is hoping to get into a hospital at some point but has a family and needs what she can get right now! $$$$$$$

Short term employment is not conducive to the hospital setting if you have no experience. I am a huge proponent of hospital experience early in a career, but since you are already in school nursing, I suggest you forgo acute care until you can devote a full year at full time to it. Camp nursing seems the best fir for your life right now.

I did camp nursing this past summer and plan to do it for the foreseeable future. I worked for 4 weeks at the camp and they let my kids attend in addition to paying me (less than what they would have paid me if I had not brought my kids but the tuition for bringing my kids would have been a LOT more). It is a great fit for me and my family. Please feel free to PM me if you'd like more info about it.

I did my first summer camp this year... probably not next year or again in the same place I went.

I have worked our district summer school sessions, summer registration, did camp nursing one year - mostly I do pedi home health.

Another summer camp nurse here! I more than double my monthly salary working at a summer camp. It's stressful, but so much fun at the same time. My first summer as a school nurse, I worked my district's ESL program.
