Let me start by saying that I know there are many areas of the country that are not hiring nurses right now, however, that is not the case where I live.
Here is my issue...
I really want to work in NICU. At this time, there are NICU positions posted at two hospitals. I've applied to both hospitals and yesterday, I got a call asking me to interview for postpartum. Here's my problem...
If I interview for the postpartum position and they offer me a job, do I take it since this isn't really my first choice or do I ask them to give me a week or so to think about it so I can explore my options regarding NICU. If I accept the position in postpartum, I will be "stuck" there 6 months before I can transfer to another department. I'm torn and don't know what to do.
In addition, she said they have a day, night, and PRN position open. My question is why are so many people leaving??? Please give me your !

You may just want to take it. Your area may be hiring at the moment but don't trust this economy. I would take the job and get any experience you can get. You never know, you may enjoy it and learn something from it. Besides, it will look good on your resume.

I totally agree! Postpartum relates to NICU so the experience will in valuable!!!
Thanks for the opinions you guys! I feel like a dog even asking that question because I'm well aware of the fact that in some areas, there are no jobs to choose from!

I so agree with the others!
I would suggest that you go to that postpartum interview and be open to what they have to offer you. And if they ask you about where you really want to be assigned, be honest and say that you really prefer NICU. Employers will appreciate your honesty and maybe get you in once they have openings.
You will gain lots in experience and with the state of economy, just be happy that you have job offers. 6 months is good. Some wait for years to be employed or even get into nursing school!
As for the day, night and prn positions, I suggest you start with the day shift first since most stuff is scheduled during the day, so you'll get the swing of things if you're exposed to the routine constantly.
There are lots of reasons why people leave. Some want greener pastures, others are burned-out, some change careers etc. You will learn more once you hear some stories from your future colleagues.
Good luck! And count your blessings dear. :)
I have absolutely amazing news to report. The interview was yesterday and it went amazingly well. I was totally honest about my first choice being NICU. When the director called this morning to offer me the postpartum position, I was totally honest and told her that I was grateful for the interview, but that I really wanted to try to find a position in NICU or pedi. WELL, it just so happens that she is also the director of pediatrics and there was an open position. She went ahead and extended me the offer on the pediatrics floor and I accepted!!! I'm now officially a a pedi GN!!! Yay!

congrats!!! i am so glad things worked in your favor. enjoy your new job rn!!! :yeah:
Congratulations!!! I'm happy that someone finally got the job they wanted. I just took a PRN Hospice job but definately not my 1st choice right now. I hope to get a Med/Surg job that I applied for and just be able to do both. I hope I get to pick the smiley face jumping up and down too in a few weeks. Will keep you posted.
EmilyLucille523,
I am going to share advice I received from my mom. She said to resist the urge to accept the first position that is offered to you. If I had not taken her advice, I would be calling myself a postpartum nurse instead of a Pedi Nurse. Stick to your guns and you will find something that's just right for you! I'll be cheering you on.

I wish I could have stuck it out but I do have rent to pay, kids to support and buy back-to-school clothes for, and bills piling up that I haven't been able to pay because I didn't have a steady income coming in during school. So yes, I would love to wait for the right one but I can't.
But thanks for the support and cheering. I will keep praying to God that something better comes along and like I said before, since the job I got now is PRN maybe I can do both jobs. I WILL BE POSITIVE!
