I have been working as a charge nurse in LTC for 5 months now and I was offered a promotion as an MDS coordinator and I was offered a job as a Nurse consultant for a pharmacy. I am so thankful to get out of doing medpass but I have no idea which position to take. I've been told that the MDS position is a managerial position which is just below that of a DON. Many of my LVN friends have gone straight to MDS and find it very easy. As for the nurse consultant position I will be very independent, creating my own schedule and I will be shadowing nurses at different facilities and helping them prepare for survey. I don't know anyone that has done nurse consulting. My administrator said that job would burn me out and would not allow me time to go back to school and finish my RN. I have NO IDEA which position I should take. I am so stressed out that I got myself sick haha...Please help!!!!

I've done MDS. Take the nurse consultant job. There is so much that goes along with MDS and they are going to be changing MDS to a new version soon.

umm well I don't know about either one but you have to look at where you want to be and what you can handle. Some quesitons to ask yourself since you didn't say if you had a spouse or kids.
1. What does my husband think
2. what are the hours of both jobs.
3. WHat are the salary differences
4. what are my responsibilities and what do i have to answer to
5. Traveling when, where and for how long and how is that going to affect my home life
6. what about future plans; school-which one is more flexible so you could go to school if that what you want
7. oppurtunities for advancement within the company
Those are just some of the ones i could think of. hope that helps
I'm single with no kids. I really want to go back to school and get my RN degree. If I do the MDS position I will gain seniority with my current company but I don't feel as though I have job security because of politics at work.
I would definately ask the boss what the long term plans are for that position. You could come across the same problems with the other job, and at least having some seniority could help when it comes to ax grinding time if that does happen in the future.
