Hello all
Need advice. So i got offered a part time job at a cardiology office. The pay and benefits are phenominal. Mon-Thur, 8:30-5pm.
I have 2 school aged kids, 6 & 11. If i take this position it would mean they need to go to aftercare. I've always worked per diem and was able to pick them up from school and never needed aftercare. My husband works evenings and is never around to help out after school.
But per diem work is never stable and at this point i want stability and benefits.
I also recieved an offer to work at an outpatient surgery center with the hours of 6-2:30pm mon-thursday. I would have to leave the house at about 5:20am to make it in time. Working that early will leave me so exhausted.
The cardiology position seems a bit more better as far as benefits go. But obviosuly i would be coming home later. Making dinner and helping with homework etc..Just seems like i wont have much time with the kids.
Anyone work similar hours to this and can you offer any advice? As i said my husband works evenings and is never home to help during the week.
Thanks and sorry my post is so long

As a mom, I would go for the OP surgery gig. My kids are 10 and 13 and I would love to have every single evening with them. Sure it's early, but only by a couple of hours. I mean, you go could make and keep appointments any day of the week, go to all the extracurricular activities if you wanted...seems like a dream. That's just me.

I'd also go with the surgical center offer. Can your husband get the kids off to school in the AM? I also would have loved to be home in the afternoon with the kids. I also agree with Pixie that it makes life easier in regards to appointments, sports, etc. You'd probably find you can adapt to getting up earlier.

Find out how busy the surgery center is first. I worked at one was told I was full time hours 7-330 but when it was slow and this was often 3 days out of 5, I was finished by 10am or 11am. I was an hourly employee so didnt get paid when we went home early.
Very good point

I was thinking the opposite of jodispamodi, we ended up often doing overtime. Not getting off at 2:30.
Irregardless I vote for the surgical center job. You'll be home with your kids. You can rest/nap for 1/2 hour after you get home.

If you have someone to take your kids to school in the morning, the surgical center job sounds ideal, in terms of hours. One thing to consider (having worked both OR and in an office setting). You will likely be much more physically active at the surgical center job. Turnovers, moving patients, hauling instruments, standing and charting are all more physically demanding that even the busiest clinic. In the clinic, much of your work will likely be on the phone, and if you are an RN, doing more case management type stuff. Translation - Even though you will home later at the cards gig, you might have more energy for your kids.
