Job Fair Frustration

Published

Just a vent here...

Today there was a job fair at my college.

None of the hospitals that showed up at the job fair were currently hiring. I'm so damn frustrated right now. Why the hell do a job fair if you aren't hiring?

"Well, this economic downturn is rough. Just keep checking our website for new postings. No, no... we're not accepting resumes here. Just apply online. If something is posted. I don't know when anything will be opening... just check the website periodically."

What gives?!?!

Then the long term care facilities that were there:

"Well, we're not really looking for graduate nurses right now. We want nursing assistants. Sorry."

I requested off from work from my crappy job for this thing and it was completely useless.

Nursing assistant are more in-demand than registered nurses??? I should have been a nursing assistant before if I would have known RN jobs are hard to find. But its too late now...sigh!

What a shame! I am still out of a job as a new RN. sighs...:sniff::sniff::sniff::sniff::sniff:

If it's any consolation to you, it was the same situation at my school's job fair...a YEAR ago!

Yup, pretty much the same thing happened last year too.

I just had orientation along with 2 New grads and they both said the job fairs they went to this year were saturated (350+) with new grads and that they felt so lucky to have landed a job. Funny thing one graduated last year in May and the other one just graduated this February from an accelarated program but they both just got hired now.

CNAs are definately more in demand now. I keep trying for a PRN job on the side and all they want right now are CNAs. I've even tried nursing homes cuz of my long-term care experience and I can't get a bite as an RN. Guess I'll just be content with what I got!

I was at the same job fair yesterday. WestPenn was the only hospital that I saw there. The woman I spoke to said that the hiring has been slow for WP and UPMC. She advised to me to start applying in December when the GN positions are listed. Speaking of UPMC, there were no nursing recruiters there at all. UPMC Rehab was there, but they don't hire nurses. I did go on the website recently and saw a lot of UPMC SON Graduate positions listed. I pray that you find a job soon, especially since you've worked so hard!

I don't even bother with job fairs anymore. How is a recruiter going to remember me out of the other hundreds of new grads there? Several told me to call them and then never returned my call. My resume was stuck in a pile with 100s of other resumes that I'm sure went into the recycling bin right after. The only good thing about one of the ones I went to was the free lunch ;) I needed that free lunch esp. since I am unemployed.

My small, private university recently hosted a job fair where there were several different recruiters from many hospitals and agencies. One recruiter (from corrections) told me that he was really just seeking new grads who had prior military experience, and threw out resumes that didn't have military experience. I wondered how many people he expected to recruit that day, seeing as how none of us had ever served...
