about IV injections

Published

Hi!I'm a new foreign grad about to start on my orientation next week.My concern is that i've never given any meds IV, IVP, start an IV line etc. Our school did not allow us as nursing students to do any of this as this route is very dangerous if any error is committed. I've mastered IM, SQ and skin test except IV injections. There has been a case bef about this when a student committed a med error and the pt died. The poor student was thrown out of school and the Instructor's license was revoked. We do have IV therapy class that we have to take after graduation for us to be certified but i wasn't able to take this class. Is it the same here?My mom who is also a nurse said that they will teach me to do this things during my preceptorship? Is it true?Man, i forgot to mention this to the nurse manager.

During orientation, they should be able to teach you how to do IV injections. I've already done some in my three weeks of orientation. Don't stress. Hopefully you will have a good preceptor who can teach you all these things. :)

Since so many nursing schools are moving away from allowing students to start IV's or give IV meds, your unit has probably already realized that new grads may need some extra help with these skills. Just make sure they don't rush you into doing something that harms a patient. If you have doubts about the steps for any skill, your charge nurses can be great resources.

hi,just learning

Specializes in Neuro, Critical Care.

those skills wont take long to master. Just dont forget to mention it to your preceptor. If you can spike a bag of regular fluids, you can spike a piggy back. If you can flush an IV line you can give an IV push (just remember to look up the push time in your med book). Dont worry, worry more ab out yoru time management and assessment skills:)
