IV drip troubles

Published

Hi All-

I am getting ready for my CPNE and am really struggling with getting my IV drip rates set. I have tried dividing the rate by 4 and calculating for 15 seconds, it just seems to take along time, (on the medic we seem to either run our lines KVO or wide open).

any suggestions?

You could try dividing by 10, and counting for 6 seconds. Once you think you have the correct rate, you can then count for 1 minute.

I count for 30 seconds and then multiply by 2. If you get a pillow of -/+ 5 gtts. This way you will be off by 2 at the most (multiplied by 2). If you do it by 15 sec and multiply by 4 like you said, you will be off by 4! and that is close to five. You sound like you have experince with the IV setup, so this will not take from your time. Get a stop watch and set an IV up and time yourself to figure out what works for you. And remember the pillow of gtts. Hope this helps.
