A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BNSC) from the UK is generally recognized in the US. Still, you will need to go through a process to have your credentials evaluated and meet the specific requirements for licensure in the state where you wish to practice.

Here are the steps you typically need to follow:

  • Credential Evaluation: Your UK nursing degree must be evaluated by an accredited credentialing agency, such as CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools) or another agency approved by the state board of nursing.
  • English Language Proficiency: Depending on your educational background, you may need to demonstrate proficiency in English by taking an exam like the TOEFL or IELTS.
  • NCLEX-RN Exam: After your credentials are evaluated and accepted, you must pass the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) to obtain licensure in the US.
  • State Licensure Requirements: Each state has its additional requirements, including background checks, additional coursework, or clinical practice hours.
  • Visa and Immigration: If you are not a US citizen or permanent resident, you must obtain the appropriate visa to work in the US as a nurse.

Contact the state board of nursing in the state where you plan to work to get detailed information about their specific requirements.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
