Is taking Microbiology online a recipe for disaster?

Published

I've found a school that doesn't require Bio as a pre-req for Micro, so I'm pretty happy about that:smokin:

but the format is online.....have any of you taken a science w/ lab online before?

I was wondering about Micro online myself. I took Phy Sci I with a lab online and it was tough. I have taken a lot of online classes and they are all harder than in the classroom especially if you work full time and have a family. I need to take Micro online too so I hope someone gives us some input on this. Good luck!!

I took A&P1 in class and A&P2 online and online was MUCH easier. I'm taking micro online and hoping it follows the same format. Usually all quizzes are untimed and you get to use all your notes and book. I highly recommend it.

I took Micro online, with the lab, and while everything was open book/open note, quizzes not timed, this particular professor was HARD. The answers were not in the book sometimes, you had to read every single line or you would miss something. That being said, I still made an A in both lab and class but it was definitely harder than taking A&P 1 & 2 online. If you are great at guiding yourself and have the discipline to study then you should be fine.

Good luck!

You can do just as well online as in a classroom, you just have to make sure you're not lazy about it. When I started online classes, I kind of started slacking because there wasn't as much accountability as there was when you were in a class setting. But once I realized I still had to study every week and go over the material every week, it was much easier :) Good luck!

Thanks for the insight everyone

Has every place you've applied/looked at not had a problem accepting online Micro? that's my only concern

Your transcript should not really have any indication that you took the class online. The online classes I took look like any other classroom course on my transcript.

As for taking Micro online, I am on the fence about it. I am planning on taking it next Spring ... am apprehensive about it either way. I am taking A&P2 online this summer (labs are on campus) and I really like it. Then again, it's a subject matter I enjoy so it was easy to get in the groove with it. I don't know about Micro however.

ted d,

take microbiology totally online at ocean county college! you do need either a&p or biology as a prerequisite.

i just finished as summer 5 week session. it was a little demanding sticking 15 weeks into a 5 week online course but i did it and got an a!!! the labs actually worked and were fun to do.

the next course is offered in the fall of 2009, microbiology biol 232 dl3 totally online in the september 8th, 2009 - december 23, 2009.

if you are from out of state you will pay a little more but i think the convenience is worth it!

you can contact the registration and records office at 732.255.0304. make sure you them that you are from another state!

as far a transfer, more than half the students in the class were from out of state trying to get into nursing school or already in nursing school. the professor is fantastic and is a former assistant commissioner of health for new jersey so i don't think there is a problem transferring.

i loved this course and the professor. it's a real find!!!

I do not think it is as much of a problem of them accepting the online class as will they accept the class from that college period. This is something I would look into before I took the class. We have a college close to us that has a micro class online, but they have reciprocity with each other, so that is not a problem. All course work transfers back and forth because your considered a transient student. As far as taking it online, that is going to come down to if you are disciplined enough to do the work each week and actually study a little. I decided to take all my science classes in a classroom setting, because I wanted to get the most out of the class I could get. Just make sure the credits transfer, that is the big thing. I would hate to see you take this class and then later be told sorry those credits do not transfer and you have to take the class over and have your plans stalled for a semester. This is just my :twocents:. Good Luck to you.
