Is this the right path to become a general nurse when I already have a degree in DD nursin

Published

Hello :)

I have a degree in nursing with intellectual disability from Ireland but I was told I could do an add on in America to become a general nurse. I'm not sure if a LVP or LPN then doing the NCLEX to become registered. Is this the way to go ? I'm really lost and would like some help in the right direction.

thank you

Not sure, but it sounds like you'd need to redo nursing school in the states. Taking the classes that you're deficient in is probably an option in most states, but it might be hard to find a school that will let you take just the needed classes.

There are 2 levels of licensure as a nurse in the US. LPN/LVN and RN. Both require you to graduate from an approved program then take the NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN. Going from LPN to RN requires additional schooling.

Have you decided what state you'll move to? If so look up the board of nursing for that state, look over their website, and give them a call.

Also, what's your immigration status? You will not be granted a visa based on being an LPN. I think RN qualifies, but finding an employer to sponsor you might be difficult because there is an abundance of domestic nurses.

It's not an add on LPN is a different level of nursing education & licensing. Similar to what was an enrolled nurse. UK specialty nursing does not transition to the generalist requirements of the US. You must be present in the US to undertake a 10-19 month practical nursing education. LPN does not meet visa requirements. And as an international student the tuition may be 2-3x that of a citizen
