When applying for a job in the medical field, do they look at your medical record. I suffered with anxiety in the past ( occassionally bouts of it every once in awhile now) and I just wanted to know if that will affect my getting a job once I finish school. ( I had a few hospital visits because of the anxiety until I finally realised that that was really what was going on with me).

If they look in your records it would be a major HIPPA violation.
So they cant discriminate against you then for a past and possibly current health issue...... I didnt think that it would be fair of them to say, hey, because you suffered from such and such a problem we cant hire you. I mean of course if it meant that you would be putting the public in harms way then I could see it being a problem, but, anxiety is more just MY problem and something that hopefully I one day will conquer getting over med free.
Thanks for the reply!

Try not to worry about it. More nurses have depression/anxiety than you would ever guess. You are not alone.

i don't know about other states, but in TX if you have been treated for schizophrenia and a few other things w/in the past 5 yrs of applying to take boards, you have to fill out extra paperwork.

Paperwork for what purpose? Applying for a job? Applying for an RN license?

Big NO. You do not have to disclose any medical information - and you shouldn't. When you go for your UDS when hired, you tell the person giving you the cup what meds you are taking. Not why. It's no one's business but your own.
It will be fine. This is one thing that you can cross off your list of things to worry about! (Trust me, I understand this one!!)

Like other posters stated...they can not look at your medical records because of HIPAA laws. But what I did do was made sure to pay off my bill for the company I was applying to. I don't think it would look good if it went to collections and I was trying to get a job there :chuckle. They might look at that.

I don't know about the laws in Canada, but in the U.S. that would not only violate HIPPA regulations but also labor laws.
Besides, do you know how many of us are on antidepressants? It's nobody's business.
The only exception would be if your health condition might affect your performance or the safety of others - say, if you were an airline pilot with an unstable arrhythmia, an AICD, or a seizure disorder.
