I'm currently enrolled in a Community College that has a great nursing program which I planned to apply to within the next year-year and a half because a lot of my pre requisites have been filled by AP tests and I was going to take CLEP exams in January; but when I asked the counseling office if the program would accept CLEPs and APs to fulfill pre reqs and they said "no". To be honest I was really expecting them to say yes and maybe limit how many, but I never thought they just wouldn't accept them. Is that normal?
I can understand not accepting CLEPs, but APs not so much. I find it really weird since this CC does in fact accept CLEPs, APs, and even some Excelsiors, but for some reason not for the nursing school. They do accept credits from other schools and International programs...
If this is normal for nursing school it's going to take me significantly longer to get into one.

Are we talking about general ed prereqs or classes required specifically for nursing? My school will take AP/CLEP for general education (english, history, etc.) but won't allow you to test out of the classes required to apply to nursing (anatomy, physiology, micro) in any form.
I should've specified - General ED. I understand that most schools wont allow you to get out of taking A&P and Micro in person. I'm just caught off guard because I don't think I should have to waste time on English and Math for example when I've taken the AP classes & exams.

Geez! That seems rough! I was able to test out of all my basic maths and english courses. My BSN program only accepted 2 CLEP/ ap exams for credit though so I did have to end up taking a technical writing course last minute. That seems bizarre, but maybe the college has had bad experiences allowing people to use these results vs. having recent course work in the class. Or maybe them just want you to spend the money taking them over!

My school will allow a 4 or 5 on AP for Chem and Psych prereqs. I'm not sure about CLEP.
Hmm maybe I'll look for other schools in the area, this is the first program I've looked into since I just recently on nursing school. But I do wonder if the person I emailed was mistaken - I just filled out a "quick counseling answers" form and got a short reply. It is bizzare considering some of the credits they will accept at this nursing school (international programs, foreign language credit by verbal exam). But yeah maybe they have a very specific reason.
