Is General Biology required for a BSN?

Published

Hi,

I was just wondering if General Biology was generally required for a BSN. I registered for it but I dont see it on any of the schools pre reqs that I want to transfer to.

Any feedback would be great. Thanks so much!

I would check the program you are thinking of applying to since it seems that programs have different requirements.

For me, even though general biology was not a true prereq for the nursing program, it was a class I needed to take A&P and micro. But, I have now decided to change schools to get my BSN once I am done with my prereqs, and the general biology now becomes a science with lab credit.

Usually not as far as I know. Check the school you want to transfer to and if not, don't take it! I didn't have to take gen bio, just A&P 1 and 2.

I had to take it as a prerequisite for the 200 level A&Ps and micro, which my school recommends for transferring to a 4 year school.

Wow seems like most people had to take Gen Bio as a pre req for Anatomy and Microbio.. for the community colleges, its Gen Chem thats a pre req. I hope Ill be okay with just Chemistry then....

Check, each school is different

One school I check just wanted a 5th science after

Chemistry

A&p1

A&p2

Microbiology

Another wanted biology, plus the 4 above

Another wanted organic chemistry and the 4

So, just check

It's usually not a pre req for the BSN itself but it'll most likely be a pre req to get into your other bio classes like anatomy/physiology and microbiology. The best thing to do would be to check with the program you want to attend.

My school didn't require a general bio. I only had a prereq for A&P and that was Chemistry. My school does require A&P 1and 2 then onto Micro.

For some schools it is and for some it isn't. For instance the ABSN prog at UPenn requires a Gen Bio credit, while Villanova's BSN Express program only requires Microbiology, Cell Biology or Genetics credit. However, for most schools that I've researched, Gen Bio isn't required.

Wow, I can't imagine any nursing program not requiring general bio.

One BSN program I am looking at does not require it. Another does and it also requires cultural anthropology. I would talk to your school of interest to find out what their exact prereqs are.
